What a question? Amateurs? Best KHL players earn millions of US dollars per year. All of the hockey players in top 20 leagues in Europe are professional players. In Germany, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia also players in many lower leagues are professionals.

I wish the stupidity to create a competing tournament in the form of World Cup will fail. Why ice hockey should be different from all other sports in the world. As a sports fan I would love to see best athletes in Olympics over all the other tournaments or leagues.

Er, soccer has a World Cup that is different from the Olympics ?

Then why shut down for the meaningless All Stars game?

You are honestly asking this? What do you think the all star game is?

The all star week is 3 days of making money for the league. And its barely a week of being down.

The olympics is over 2 full weeks of no hockey, no money, and paying money for the nhl players to be at the olympics.

I honestly can't believe people are so blind that they can't understand why the nhl would rather host its own all star game over going to the olympics.

Amateurs only would be a huge advantage for the US. NCAA is the best amateur league in the world by far.

I don't know about that. But I think it's underrated, compared to Canadian Junior leagues. So many great players come out of the NCAA - even Canadians (Toews, for example). That said (and forgive me if I misunderstand), if Candian Junior leagues are considered "amateur" I think they'd have the best advantage.

It’s simply an age thing. The best CHL players are signing pro deals at 18-19. So they’d be out. NCAA players are often in their early twenties.

The NCAA players aren’t necessarily better than Chl players at 17 or 18. They are just older and more developed.

It applies when the player is from a EU country and his move is hindered.

EU law has zero legality in the US. The best the EU could do is let an EU player come to Europe and ignore his North American contract like the Russians occasionally do.

I think most people would be okay with a real World Cup. The biggest issue is now we have a farce World Cup (fake teams and no set schedule) and no Olympics. So basically no best on best hockey.

Yeah, it's a terrible tournament as it stands. The NHL really blew it given what happened with the Olympics.

I meant a EU player moving from Europe to NA. Plus at least in Finland the Finnish league PA would declare war on the league or federation for any attempts to block players from moving and they're far too well layered up that either of those would take a risk.

Ah yes releasing from the EU contract would also apply you are right.

Hard to see that happening, minding that transfers with Jokerit are already restricted - illegally.

I don't think NHL will participate in 2022, because Betman & friends want to make World Cup the replacement of Olympics permanently.

If Bettman tries to sell that joke of an exhibition tournament as an alternative to the Olympics then he is in for a rude awakening. No one cared the first time the NHL trotted that joke out back in the early 2000s, no one cared much the most recent time they aired it, and no one will care for the next one. Everyone who isn't the most hardcore of hockey fans will just roll their eyes and watch another sport in the interim as they wait for the NHL season to start. Not only that, I am sure that NBC Comcast will find a way to "incentivize" Bettman to stop his silly shenanigans.

If you are going to have a "real" World Cup in ice hockey, then it has to be run by the IIHF not one particular league.

Optimally that would be the World Championships, if necessary relocated to take place another time of the year. But the problem is that it's an annual event that has many levels, and making it every four years wouldn't work well with that structure. Maybe there could be another type of annual or biennal tournament as a replacement and additionally the World Championships every four years with proper qualification like in football.

NHL will not participate in 2018 Olympics

The NHL won’t participate as per the article; no Pyeongchang equals no Beijing.

**** the NHL.
I can think of 1.4 billion reasons the NHL will want to go to China.

Plus the hockey gold was just won by professional players from the second best league in the world, by athletes not allowed to compete under their flag due to the country's systematic doping, led by a couple NHLers who broke their contracts to play in the KHL and a player banned from the league for domestic violence.

Something tells me the IOC and NHL may work a bit harder to resolve their differences.

In normal sport world, a team can trade a player to a team from another league. Weird it is not possible in the NHL´case, but a player has to "retire." Looks like the players are slaves.

Since you used a term "broke", I remind you there is, maybe 90% of European players, who break their contracts to play in the NHL.
