One of the worst threads I’ve ever seen even for mulletman standards.

Just the fact that he proceeds to list other “bad” 80 point players is cringeyyyy.

Wouldn't that make Rantanen closer to Kariya status then?
Well I've never been that impressed by Kariya. Dude was mooching off of Selanne for most of his career. Kariya even said he wouldn't have made the Hall of fame if it wasn't for Selanne...

Rantanen is 21 and in his sophomore season. Nylander scored 80+ when he was 35. Brunette was 34. Murray 31. Lang 31. Stillman 31.

Very weird comparison age wise.

So it looks more and more like Rantanen will actually make it to 80 Points this season as he's only 1 Point short and still has 9 games to play. Nobody saw this comming as MacKinnon has carried Rantanen to numbers that Rantanen was never supposed to hit. But we've seen this Before were players put up numbers they've got no business putting up and it remains a fluke. So the question then becomes is if Rantanen scores 1 more point is Rantanen the worst player in the last 20 years to score at least 80 Points?

I've looked through the stats and found 5 other guys that could give Rantanen a run. And here they are:

2000-01 Robert Lang: 32+48=80 Points playing on a stacked Penguins team with Art Ross winning Jaromir Jagr

2002-03 Glen Murray: 44+48=92 Points while getting carried by Joe Thornton. Murray was a career Jussi Jokinen player otherwise during his career...

2003-04 Cory Stillman: 25+55=80 Points on a cup winning Tampa team playing with St Louis, Richards and Lecavalier.

2006-07 Andrew Brunette: 26+57=83 Points while mooching off of 100 Point scoring Joe Sakic...

2006-07 Michael Nylander: Never the pretty boy star player like his son is turning out to be, benefiting immensely from playing with Jaromir Jagr in a high scoring year.

So can 2017-18 Mikko Rantanen top this list, or do you have an even worse candidate for worst player to score 80 Points in the last 20 years?

All of these players listed are around 1000 games and with 600 points or more and 200 goals or more. Rantanen, like Stillman, is a top ten pick. That's hockey excellence in other words. In fact Rantanen is ahead of Landeskog whose never scored 70 points.

In the world of HFboards' needless threads, I"d think a more charitable thread would be: Is Gabriel Landeskog the BEST player never to score 70 points?

At least then, the pointless exercise could occasion the best of the excessively scrutinized professional athelete rather than fall flat in it's attempt to occasion the worst.

Kariya put up 108 points in 1995-1996, with Selanne only playing 28 games for the Ducks that year.

Not even close when we've got guys like Matthews and Laine...

Yeah but he wouldn't have made it to 100 Points without 28 games with Selanne. He started to score much more after Teemu arrived and showed him how to hockey...

MacKinnon is a 1st overall pick with Art Ross potential and he's finally showing it. Rantanen is just along for the ride...
Look at the goal he scored last night and tell me he's "Just along for the ride. There's a reason Landeskog is nowhere near Mackinnon and Rantanen in scoring.

That's just wrong. Selanne was always pretty dependent on his linemates production. He never was able to really reach his potential and his career took a total nosedive after the knee problems. Selanne was just one of those "what if" players who never reached star status, just like Saku Koivu and Jari Kurri. One of the best on their respective teams, sure. In the discussion to be the among the best in the league, not even once during their careers.

Your thread will look ridiculous if Rantanen repeats 70-80 points next season :D Don't you think MacKinnon gets a lot of points for playing with such a complete player like Rantanen as well as Rantanen gets points playing with a superhero player like MacKinnon? Wakey wakey

Andrew Brunnette....i actually didn't believe he scored 80...i checked 3 different websites to make sure..

I Still don't believe it.... all 3 sites hacked. Bravo OP
