Off the top of your head, does anyone know if Gretzky's last goal was an empty netter? No. No you don't. I don't know without looking it up. And neither do you without looking it up. That's because it doesn't matter.

Off the top of your head, does anyone know if the goal Gretzky scored to take the lead from Gordie Howe was an empty netter? No. No you don't. That's because it didn't matter either.

Just like it wouldn't matter if Ovie's record breaking goal is into an empty net.

Not sure, but I think one of his record breaking goals was an empty netter. Can’t recall if it was the 50 in 39 or #77.

I think the bigger question is when he scores and everyone celebrates then the video coach says there was an offside, does the opposing team challenge it and ruin the moment ?

They literally stopped the game when Gretzky got 802 lol (on a legit goal with a goalie in net mind you) and it's up on various YouTube clips and highlights and whatever, so yes, we do know, and yes, it mattered

Gretzky's 50th in 39 was disgustingly on an empty netter and I'm sure he's ashamed with it being recorded for posterity, especially his big ass celebration for an empty netter lol

I don't think that he would want the record-breaking goal to be an empty netter. Does anyone remember how he scored his 802nd to pass Howe? He clearly didn't want to shoot the puck initially and passed it to Kuzy, but Kuzy passed it right back, so Ovie had no choice but to ice the game then.

Also, he has been pretty consistent lately with his anniversary goals: 500, 600, 700, and 800 were all non-empty netters. So, I think that he and his teammates understand the importance of the record, and will try to make sure that it's a regular goal.

Hopefully. Only circumstance it wouldn’t be challenged is if the other team is completely out of contention and likely either winning or losing big in the game as well.

I think it detracts from the moment and even the integrity of the game a bit when milestones are “given” away. Favre laying down to give Strahan his record breaking sack comes to mind first. Another would be Jeter’s last at bat at Yankee stadium, where there is some question as to the effort on the part of the opposing pitcher.

He passes off to Kravtsov who jumps in from the crowd and starts his reign, within 10 years he has broken Wayne and Ovis record and has gone down as the GOAT of Hockey where he retires to cure cancer and solve the world's population problem through his innovative breeding program.

The guy is going to break the record and there’s still a crowd insecure enough to take shots at Gretzky.
I didn’t realize how hated/underrated Gretzky is on this site but it becomes clearer every day. I guess that’s what happens when you are better than their favorite player off of assists alone. Not needing to score a goal to be the goat statistically would anger a good sized crowd and you’d certainly see many fans doing mental gymnastics as well as inventing new ways to diminish the most dominant goat in the history of team sports.

You crazy? We all remember it.

He scored it from McSorely against Vancouver, cuz he almost always got his major milestones in Vancouver.

His last goal was against the Islanders. We all knew he was retiring by then. His last assist was against the Pens in his last game.

Gretzky’s 50th goal in 39 games was into an empty net and the previous 4 were after deking out beer league defenders wearing leggings.

I feel strongly that he should not score that goal. Some things are just bigger than making one play in one game. This would be turning one of the most meaningful moments in the history of the sport into a joke and a controversy.

I realize there’s very little place left for the notion of a “spirit of the game”, but it really has to prevail in a moment like this.

Brett Favre gave up that lame sack to his buddy and no one cared.

Frankly this thread is a complete waste of time, he is going to break the record it doesn't matter how at all.

If it went off his ass and it was his last game it wouldn't affect his legacy one bit as players legacies are built during their peak, prime highest moments not in their swan songs.

Are you serious? That was a huge controversy. Big enough that everyone knows what you’re talking about.

He was confronted about it by a despondent Mark Gastineau, whose record was broken and who directly blamed Favre for costing him not just the record but the Hall of Fame.

People still feel passionately about this. This video was made two weeks ago:

It’s not about his legacy, it’s about an iconic and borderline sacred moment in the sport being reduced to a nothing play.

I dunno about huge, I was watching the game and thought well that was lame but the game wasn't shrouded by it but then again Favre is a complete dick so maybe that's why it didn't stick.

It's just another goal among many.

Did MJ hack your account or something?

Gretzky was a horrible 2 way player late in his career, does anyone care.
