Easy question…

if it’s the last minute of the game and other team had pulled their goalie and he is skating down with a teammate on an empty net… Does Ovi put it in the empty net for the record breaking goal OR does he pass it off and wait to score that goal during a game on a goalie

Well if I were to be considered the best goal scorer in the history of a sport, I sure as hell wouldn't want an empty netter!
He's gonna save that last goal till game 7 of SCF OT!

lol why do people care so much about what 1 goal out of what will be 900+ looks like, just because it happens to be the one that passes another player. He'll have more goals after he officially breaks the record so this won't even be the ultimate record setting goal anyways. He would make the best play to help his team win that game -- if that is scoring into the empty net himself then that's what it'll be.

I think (would hope) Ovechkin has more class than to break a record of this magnitude with an empty netter

Its going to be with 10 minutes left vs the Isles and Gretzky is going to shake down Roy because he's mad his record was shattered unceremoniously.

No, it doesn't matter, stop.

Off the top of your head, does anyone know if Gretzky's last goal was an empty netter? No. No you don't. I don't know without looking it up. And neither do you without looking it up. That's because it doesn't matter.

Off the top of your head, does anyone know if the goal Gretzky scored to take the lead from Gordie Howe was an empty netter? No. No you don't. That's because it didn't matter either.

Just like it wouldn't matter if Ovie's record breaking goal is into an empty net.

If it's the last or 2nd to last game of the season (or an important game in the playoff race), of course he does. If he has another 10 games to go, I'd understand him wanting to break the record against a goalie. It's silly in a vacuum but I get the question lol.

But it's not like he can control it even in the next game. If he did pass it (he won't), the next goal could end up being an own goal where he was just the last Cap to touch it, or a scrum where someone gets hurt. Or a lob where the goalie misplays it, or some iffy goal with a review that people will debate forever.

He knows he can't pick. So why pass one up when it could end up being even worse?
