Value of: If McDavid doesn’t extend

I would definitely trade McDavid this offseason if he decided he wanted to leave. I would also expect there to be an extension in place because I believe he would only be traded if he decided he wanted to leave Edmonton and it would be to somewhere he wanted to go and the team trading for him will open their vault and happily pay him what he wants. I doubt it will happen though, I fully expect him to extend with the Oilers.

For starters, not happening. McDavid is definitely extending, and these conversations will be a thing of the past by late summer.

But IF he decided not to extend, there’s not really a futures based package from another contender that would make sense. Any offer would have to contain a really good piece. Something like:

From Dallas - Wyatt Johnston + 2027 1st for McDavid @ 50%

From NJ - Hischier + Nemec for McDavid @ 50% + Kulak

Those I would consider, as it has future elements but also a piece that helps now (though major downgrade from McDavid).

Stars fan here saying that Oilers will laugh at that offer. For McD 50% retained, you'd better be adding to that (not Seguin), and by adding to that, Stars are likely losing some more key players, thereby making them less of a contender than currently.

McD isnt going anywhere.

If he doesnt stay, why would he agree to be traded? Not staying means he can go anywhere he wants for the max contract. Unless he picks the team he wants to go to and tells the oilers management its there or get nothing, why would he agree to it. Also that would severely lower the value of any trade package.

He will sign a market leader 8-year extension this summer and we can put this behind. Draisaitl wouldn’t have extended if McDavid wasn’t planning to. All that’s happened since then is… the Oilers made it back to the Stanley Cup Finals. We can put all this behind after this summer.

I rarely create threads and while this is a bit early, several current posts got me thinking (not always a good thing).
I’m guessing he stays with the Oil … BUT

McDavid decides he’s done in Edmonton, He does however give them permission to move him to a contender.
If (IF) the Oilers retain 50% and will except a cap dump (along with a LOT of value) what does your contender team offer to add 50% retained McDavid at the TDL?

An already good team + McDavid would seem to be unbeatable.
if McDavid says he will not extend, he'd be an Oilers rental, as he's their only chance at winning a Cup.
Nobody would trade for McDavid knowing he wasnt resigning

An already good team would need to give up all its best assets to get McDavid which makes it useless.

I'd guess one of the few teams that could make a deal would be Buffalo, as they could offer Dahlin and Peterka and still have 2 studs at LHD and solid offense, and then perhaps the Buffalo curse would be over.

That NJ package is actually very interesting.

It is certainly a downgrade, but not a catastrophic one even for the present. As you would be getting a Selke level forward for the next 8-10 years. That team can still compete, provided you use the cap room this summer wisely.

Whoever plays NJD next summer though, help them. They will be going against a team where Jack is the 2C. :help::help::help:

Wait.. you're asking for retention on CONNOR MCDAVID??? and they take a cap dump in return?

I get that this the Trade/FA board, but why on earth would McDavid want to leave a team that has made the SC two years in a row. It's not like the Oilers are going to nickle and dime him.

As for value, 2 of your best roster pieces, 2 of your best prospects, your next 2 1st round picks. And maybe that would be enough?

Bouchard will be a boat anchor of a contract very soon.

He's good offensively. Defensively.......

At the end of the regular season I would have agreed with this and would be reluctant to pay him 8mil. But he has looked phenomenal in these playoffs, and it’s the second playoff run in a row. He will likely be looking for 11. Hoping he takes 10.5.

Connor 8 x 16.5
Bouch 8 x 10.5

Core locked up for 41 mil. It’s steep, but it’s arguably the best 3 player core in the league.
