Except that adjusted goals is fake.

I mean, I can adjust Matthews goal total from last season by turning every post he hit into a goal, and every goal he had waived off into a goal

If I do that he's at about a goal a game and might even be over that.

But I can't do that because you can't adjust goals, because adjusted goals isn't real it's fake
So you have no understanding of what it means. Got it

You may be the only person on this earth (even Marleau’s family would vote Lemieux) that thinks
1779 GP and 566 goals is somehow comparable to
915 GP and 690 goals.

If you think games played has any particular relevance to adjusted stats in this instance, then you don't understand adjusted stats.

The problem is on your end because you appear to be inferring things I have not said and things that the stats I posted don't imply.

2000-01 was his 35 year old season with having missed the previous 3. That is pretty much a 70 goal pace.

2001-02 was his first injury season that limited his games, plus he sat out some to be ready for his only Olympic appearance. Still a 20 goal pace.

2002-03 led the league in scoring until March 5th, 2003, when he started to miss almost all of the Penguins final games. Had 28 goals, on pace for 34

2003-04 missed every game but 10 due to hip issues.

2005-06 Crosbys first season, Only played 26 games and was forced to retire due to the heart issue that was found. Still on pace for a 22 goal season. He was 40 years old.

I don't think his performance was an issue. It was the health that limited him.
Gretzky was ahead at every age. Significantly.

By them both being 27 he had created a gap of 100+ goals.

And then, late in their careers, Wayne was able to widen the gap.

Simple as that.

Wayne peaked higher, and Wayne played longer.

Patrick Marleau has more career adjusted goals than Mario Lemieux.

That's just a basic metric. No need to get emotional.

Now let's do real numbers

Marleau 566 goals in 1779 games.

Lemieux 690 goals in 915 games.

Marleau played nearly twice the games and STILL finished 124 goals behind Mario.

You can "adjust" all you want but the REAL numbers say they aren't even close.

The raw numbers are not indicative because the scoring environment changed significantly.

Adjusted stats are more indicative in this case.

Even with your raw (unindicative) numbers, Lemieux is closer to Marleau (+124) than he is to Ovechkin (-163 and counting).

I think you're right about Lemieux. But this is a bit of a rabbit hole. You can "if" your way into a million different things. If Gretzky's first season had been in the NHL instead of the WHA (he got over 40), then is the number unbeatable?

This kind of thinking never ends.

But a case can absolutely be made that Mario had the potential to be the all-time goal scoring leader.

Or if the cheap artist Suter doesn't go after Gretzky's back in 91.

Yes his goal scoring was already trending down, but that hit accelerated it.

Marleau didn't lose 600+ games of his career to injury and cancer.

Mario did.
