Post-Game Talk: I Will Have The Soup With That Win

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
We do need a trade to shake things up. Jets fans whine and stamp their feet at Leafs players complaining about penalties.

All the while Schiefele just complains and gets out played by Matthews, Connor trips and tries to act like he didn't, then acts surprised when he gets called.

I love beating this team so much. You see their "Star" players turn cheek and mentally collapse.

By all rights we could have easily lost that game, all it took was a couple penalty kills to demotivate their offense, along with Soup just shutting the door.

All the while our powerplay is dry AF and we still drag them to overtime before winning the spectacle.

To the issue of the PP: once they gain the zone, the Leafs look good, decent puck movement, shot selection, etc. . It's gaining the zone that is killing them. Half of the power play is spent circling back to their own zone to pick up a puck that has been stopped at the blue line or fired down ice from the corner because we're stalling our speed using that gosh darn annoying drop pass. Everyone knows it's coming. Attack with speed, dump if you need to, force their defensive posture into a more cautious position, once we're in their zone we can attack with the skills we have. Even if we don't score, I'd rather see 1'30" of circling and moving in the O zone, tiring out the opposition, which might lead to a benefit later in the game, rather than this disjointed, time wasting, low event process which we are constantly overusing.

That issue is easily solved with a successful dump/chase/forecheck.

Heavy teams regularly execute that with ease 5-on-5, nevermind with a man-advantage...

The Leafs seem to think they can just cruise through the neutral zone and over the blue line, unabated.

I've done all I can here, enjoy the rest of your night folks. Time for me to see if I can pick up a new driver head and add some distance to the game, it's time to retire the 11 year old Titleist. I tried the new TSi3 and loved it, but at 22,000 baht (just over $900 C) a little too much for my blood. Perhaps a TS3 at 9.5, the difficulty being I'm a lefty and finding left hand clubs here is like mining for gold in your backyard. Oh well, who cares, Leafs WIN a great game. Cheers.

As I said, Rielly is not the problem. The puck in the zone runs through Marner, and Rielly is doing what he is supposed to be doing. The issue right now is that Marner is not doing his job on the point right now and that makes everyone else fall apart.

Our PP would probably be doing better if we let Rielly take Marner's job and let Marner do some stuff off of the puck or open up another forward who can shoot. Maybe use Marner as a bumper as Leafsfans74 suggested. So I guess it is not much unlike what you are suggesting, but instead of saying we don't have a defenseman who can run the PP, we need someone other than Marner to run the PP right now. We just aren't getting the puck to our shooters right now and that mostly falls on Marner considering he is the guy who has the puck the most right now.

At the same time, nobody respects a Reilly shot from the point so he doesn't pull out the defenders to open things up for any of the forwards to make a play.

Leafs vs Jets through 6 games

Scheifele - 1G, 3A, -5
Connor - 2G, 2A, -3
Ehlers - 3G, 3A, -1
Wheeler - 0G, 1A, -3

6 goals, 8 assists, -12

Matthews - 4G, 3A, +1
Marner - 3G, 4A, +4
Nylander - 2G, 2A, +3
Tavares - 1G, 2A, +4

10 goals, 11 assists, +12

Their elite players seldom back check. They talk smack about Matthews and Marner but their players float in their own zone. I wonder how good that team would be without Helle, Lowry and Copp.

At the same time, nobody respects a Reilly shot from the point so he doesn't pull out the defenders to open things up for any of the forwards to make a play.
Actually you better pay attention because it's probably coming in around head high. Rielly to me is a guy who shoots wrist shots and tries to snipe top corners, if he's out at the point, he just floats in a high wrist shot. He has no slap shot to speak of.

They don't need to respect his shot in hopes of it being a Matthews snipe. They know this guy can skate it if he has too much space and he is dangerous if he can skate with the puck in the zone.

I used to be a big fan of Scheifele when he first came around. It's a shame to see how much his game has dropped. Maybe its age, i dunno.

I really like Connor and respect his game. Ehlers too.

Seems we have been just a bit fortunate they were a bit off.

Nevertheless, huge wins against the best competition in division. I got nothing to be upset about tonight.

I'd say dont diss Hall, just on the off chance hes a Leaf soon.

uhhh hoping it doesn't happen, 5 years ago oh my yes and more yes, but now just not sure what to make of him, I've watched a couple of Slugs games, he's not getting the chances he should be getting, he kind of drifts through shifts or takes them off completely and sometimes he's a pure gangster and dominates. Back in the Oiler and Jersey days he had the kind of drive that would lift you out of your seat, he doesn't seem to want to be that guy anymore? He is a mystery

I'm hoping he is not, hence the post.

I concur

What if hes that way bc of all the losers in Buffalo.

Once he gets here and plays with guys that enjoy the game and home in Toronto, he'll do a 180, and Kyle Dubas will be called a genius.

The Leafs are also starting to peak at the right time. Momentum and confidence can really a huge thing for the team overall!
Squeaking out low-scoring wins combined with an ineffective PP, suggests goaltending is now masking other problems that will need to be fixed for us to have any chance.

ok sure, and what if he's not
It depends on the cost. At this point you gotta think Sabres will give him away for just a pick.

As long as we dont trade a big haul for him he cant really cost us.

Anyway, enough about Hall tbh.

Enjoying this win. Galchenyuk been good too.

If Simmonds and Jumbo can spark it up here we'll be aright.

Speed is the biggest thing lacking in the PP now compared to earlier in the season. The slower you go, the easier you make it for the opponent to defend you. With the skill and speed on this roster there is no reason I can see for it other than a lack of confidence.

I would also like to see a few more shots on net, both shooting more often and from taking a little off the shot if necessary to get it on net. If they can get the PP clicking again it's less of an issue since earlier in the season they weren't shooting that often and were scoring constantly because they were grade-A chances.

This is essentially the problem.

Having a shot threat from the point is a key ingredient to any powerplay.

A huge portion of Ovechkin's success on the PP over the years is simply a result of Carlson/Green passing on clappers from the point.

Why is he always so open, otherwise?
