Who here has experience raising/training a dalmatian? I know they can be aggressive if they're not raised properly. But I've also read they can make great pets with the proper training. I enjoy living an active lifestyle with lots of exercise, which is important for this breed. Feedback and advice is appreciated!

I want a pet too but it's very complicated you have to pay vet bills and stuff

I think I might as well get a pet from a shelter. SEe if they have any dalmatians there. Probably don't want to get a dog from a pet store (puppy mill etc)

I can tame any canine

But they are high maintenance. They need to run

Akin to a husky in that respect

Didn't you get a dog a few weeks ago?

101 Dalmatians and the ensuing popularity boon destroyed the breed. So many neurological issues with those dogs and one of the few breeds I wouldn't recommend.

It's sad how these movies with a specific breed then causes over breeding for money with no care for genetics etc.

I'm currently gathering information from a breeder. I'm getting the impression that if the puppies are BAER tested and their parents are healthy and have good temperaments, then the puppies should be fine and relatively healthy throughout their life with proper care.

Best thing you can do. People with decades of experience owning/living/showing/competing/breeding the breed can answer your questions a lot better than any of us on here. Research for yourself, ask lots of questions (especially tough ones relating to any concerns you may have), do your homework and bounce things off your breeder. Good to see the sire and dam in person, spend some time with them and see their temperaments for yourself as well as the puppies. Make sure the breeder contract (read it over carefully) guaranties against/takes responsibility for the more common genetic diseases with-in the breed that are inherited - that is a must as you do not want to be on the hook for breeder malpractice.

Good luck. My Great Danes love Dalmatians, we've met some nice ones, but it's a breed that you have to be prepared to take the good with the bad with. But then again, you can say that for any breed.

Yep. Seen it with far too many breeds. The importance of aesthetic dogs over sound and functioning dogs in the conformation world has also destroyed too many. Look at GSD's and Labs especially... ugh :(

Silver labs are an abomination...
