I haven’t been this happy since 2017

I’ve been on an island as a Sens fan for awhile, practically all the huge fans I know stopped caring and watch way more NFL/NBA. The best part about this season is watching them all start to come back slowly and even non-fans asking about them.

If (when) we make the playoffs it’s gonna be so great.

Hey maybe Dorion put together a pretty good team after all :naughty: I understand he made a lot of mistakes but he's the one who drafted all those amazing players, Stu, Tkachuk, Sanderson, Pinto. I'm glad he's gone but we need to gve credit where credit is due.

At the same time, you're not really supposed to screw up often on lottery picks. So thank you Dorion for not ruining 3 drafts out of the 8 drafts you were in charge (let's not forget the Logan Brown, Tyler Boucher, Lassi Thomson/Duchene, DeBrincat, Chychrun drafts). In 2017, he gets a pass as we drafted 28th OA.

- Brady Tkachuk at 4th OA (we had already lost a 4th OA pick the previous year in the Duchene fiasco) : he could have screwed up with Zadina or Wahlstrom but could have hit an even bigger homerun with Quinn Hughes or Evan Bouchard. Dobson would have been another very good pick too

- Tim Stutzle at 3rd OA : some say we were very lucky to end up with this pick as no one saw San Jose's free fall. I did but still didn't see their pick being higher than 10th OA. Lafreniere was going to be #1 for sure, LA chose Byfield so Stutzle was a NO BRAINER pick.

- Jake Sanderson at 5th OA : one of the best picks under Dorion, full credit for not going with Drysdale, Quinn or Holtz.

- Full credit for Batherson and Pinto picks. Also great job in 2020 on Greig, Kleven and Merilainen picks but that's about it, in 8 drats...

Credit for Zub and Giroux signings, although we lucked out in Giroux's case. Good job for getting Norris in a trade for a 27 y/o double but future triple Norris winner I guess. Chabot was already drafted when he became GM. We struck out on so many other assets, the list is too long to write for this post.

Overall, IMO the most credit Dorion deserved is :

Sanderson, Batherson, Pinto, Tkachuk, Norris, Zub, Giroux, Greig, Kleven, Merilainen

I think our situation is more due to Murray (Dorion inherited several very valuable assets like Karlsson, Stone, Zibanejad, etc) and bottoming out for so long (we were supposed to draft Top-12 for 6 years in a row), plus the tweaks already made by Staios but mostly in terms of coaching and goaltending.

Hughes would've been our EK replacement, but Bouchard wouldn't be putting up points without McDrai. Yes you need skill to play with skilled guys, but Bouchard is a tier below Hughes, Tkachuk, Dahlin, Svechnikov. He's in the same tier as Dobson, Marchenko, Miller, etc., and I take Dobson or Marchenko over him

How many teams have successfully done a rebuild since 2017 without a 1st overall pick?

Hughes is going to be a Top-10 D-man of all-time, I think he's going to be regarded comfortably higher than EK when all is said and done. He is clearly a tier above everyone else from 2018, maybe even 2 tiers.

Hughes
------
Dahlin
Tkachuk
Bouchard
Dobson
Svechnikov
Marchenko
------
Rest

I know Marchenko hasn't proved it as long as others but has been breaking out in a MAJOR way this season, and not just offensively.

Regarding Bouchard, I know there has been a long debate going on but I find him elite in his own way., That said, ok I'll keep Tkachuk above him for now.

We were not lucky regarding the lottery but Stutzle is 1st OA worthy so that played out fine. Even Sanderson could be considered in certain classes.

I am grateful for that 2020 draft, as I have said before, one of the best drafts in NHL history.

Dorion was involved in the scouting and drafting for a long time before he became GM. he has a lot of other ribbons on is jacket for picks before he was GM.

I don't want to turn this into a 2018 redraft thread, but I'm intrigued that you put Bouchard ahead of Svechniokv. Dobson, you can make the argument, but Svechnikov is a better top-line winger than Bouchard in top pairing D.

Also, not sure about Hughes comfortably ending up as higher than EK. EK at a certain point was a top 3 player in the league. Not sure if Hughes will be that, although you can probably make that case this season.

Florida, Dallas and Carolina.

And Vegas did a successful build.

(forgot about Ekblad)
Dallas only missed the playoffs twice single 2017 and even made the finals in 2020 with a bunch of players they've had since forever, like Seguin, Benn, Klingberg etc.

Carolina also only missed one playoff since 2017, but yeah, they're probably the only example.

Anyways, all I'm saying is "drafting is the easiest part of a rebuild" is a pretty stupid argument. That's the biggest failure point of so many rebuilds around the league. That's not the case for us.
