I always preferred the way Europe handles the league structure in soccer. No cap, pay your players what you like, and if you want another team's player, pay them a shitload of money for the rights to sign him. Yes, rich teams run unchecked, but some teams in small markets make tons of money by developing and selling their talent. They stay competitive that way.
Also, love the idea of relegating teams that suck. Bottom two teams in the league play in the AHL next year. Top two AHL teams move up to the NHL. Obviously, a system like this will never be implemented, but it was always my preference as someone who watches a lot of soccer. Fighting to stay up is almost as exciting as challenging for the league title. Tends to raise the level of overall play in a league too. Oh well.
