I was having some numbness in my left finger and hand starting around the time I got my x-ray on my left hand. I went to to my doctor to describe my condition. He told me I have carpal tunnel. I will have to sleep with a splint and Dad and I will go to Fry's Electronics or Best Buy to get an ergonomic keyboard.

Do you or any of your friends or family have carpal tunnel? If so, what are some advice for me?

Well I have a friend who had surgery for carpal tunnel on both wrists

He worked as a school janitor and I guess the constant movement was the cause.

He had surgery and had to stop work for a few months. He's fine now.

That's good.

I ordered an ergonomic keyboard from bestbuy.com and Dad got me a splint. I'm trying the splint as we speak.

I'll trade you my digital eye strain for that.

That way I can look at a TV screen again and not have my eyes hurt and have to take days off of the computer.

I'm a software dev. I've become extremely cautious about using my wrists for anything, because I'm just coming off a near 2 year period of flirting with carpal tunnel / RSI. The first thing my (sports*) doctor told me, is that one should try to avoid surgery as long as possible, because the surgery often makes things worse in the long run (that's what he literally told me). Even injections should be delayed as long as possible.

Have adjusted my work habits, small details like making sure your hands are positioned well vis à vis my keyboard (hands positioned well above it), getting a keyboard as FLAT and SOFT as possible (don't get fooled into buying a super expensive ergonomic keyboard, most are still ****), getting a vertical mouse, try to let my wrists rest after work and STOP DOING whatever extra stuff I'm doing at home as soon as I feel that one of my wrists is getting tired. Which sucks, because I used to weight lift regularly, something which I've had to stop doing for over a year, and which I'm only now starting to think of picking up again.

I still don't have the strength in my wrists that I used to have, but I'm at a point now where I can do specific wrist-strengthening exercises without actually causing more discomfort.

Lately, I've been developing some minor numbness in my left index finger, again probably due to overuse. Again, the only real treatment is to try to get as much rest for it as possible. You can also supplement it with ice cold treatment of the affected area for a couple minutes every evening. Ofcourse, there's meds too... out here Voltaren gel is very popular, it's an NSAID. As far as tablets go, Gambaran (another NSAID) is usually number one choice. I have no idea under what names those are sold in the USA/Canada.
It's not like with other ailments, where rest is 'bad' for you... in our case the condition is simply put cause by overuse, you take away the cause and the healing process begins.

* Yes, sports doctors also treat 'regular' folks with symptoms similar to those of professional athletes.

Massage, stretching, using affected joints sparingly (by using the other hand for instance), and some cannabis has worked for me. My symptoms have significantly reversed over time. Good luck to you.
