I don't think Mike Grier is going to have a job next year.

I think he buys out or buries Vlasic, and with Couture's LTIRetirment there's no more dead weight. He's done a great job accumulating assets, and now it's time to turn them into a real hockey team.

I think the team needs to show growth and avoid a disastrous year and he'll be fine. Celebrini can't look like Bedard this year or his seat gets hot. His seat isn't hot at all at the moment imo and playoffs is an unrealistic demand.

If the sharks don't make the playoffs, or at least compete for a position. Two dead last finishes are an accomplishment on the boards but in the real world, it's an embarrassment. I think they have the tools and it's going to be time to stand and deliver. Another bottom 5 finish isn't going to cut it. He's my pick for GM on the hottest seat going in to next season.

Are you new to following hockey?

Mike Grier did exactly what he was supposed to do this season which was tear down all the parts that aren't part of the future of the San Jose Sharks and trade them for as much draft capital as possible.

Mike Grier isn't going to lose his job, he's been doing exactly what he's supposed to do with a franchise in the early stages of a rebuild.

As a Ducks fan it hurts a bit to admit that the Sharks are probably going to have a shorter overall timeline for their rebuild than Anaheim did/does. The Ducks look to be coming out of their putrid years (& a lot will depend on who the new coach is). SJ is in the middle of their putrid years & looking at the way things are coming along, will probably be back into the potential playoff eligibility run after a couple more years (not ready for a deep run though).

Without a massive screw up (such as making national non-sports headlines for something), Grier is perfectly secure as he's been doing a good job.

He'll have a job.
The hardest job for any GM, proven time and time again, is coming out of a rebuild/scorched earth.... he hasn't even started that ascension yet.

It's easy to demolish a roster, have 50 point seasons and draft high... the hard part is putting together the pieces to get yourself out of that cycle. That's what separates the teams that end up in the infinity loop of rebuilding/retooling and those that go on to become contenders.

He doesn't have to make the playoffs next year, but you'd want to see some small-step improvements from being a sub 60 point team. If he can get the team into the 35-38 win area that would be a big success in my opinion. My fear is that San Jose is going to be stuck in neutral for a long time; they sell everything not nailed down, and while that looks good on paper, it's hard to make the next steps when any veteran worth a pick is shipped out.

That defensive group will be the limitation on them doing anything. That's a dumpster fire if I've ever seen one.
I agree. Question then becomes, will he be given the timeline needed to make the transition? He took over the GM role just before the draft in 2022. Within 3 weeks after his hire, Quinn was hired as HC. I assume Quinn was Grier's choice or at least Grier was part of the process. Now, Waf is the HC after 1 season.

So, this upcoming year is #4 for him. So, you need to give him at least 6 years at the helm to do the turnaround portion for years 5 and 6. Otherwise, no reason to bring him back if he's on the hotseat. Won't be making the right decision for the club if he's thinking about doing whatever it takes to land a contract extension for himself.

Grier has a big mess to clean up and it has taken a but for him to find his feet and if the sharks board is to be believed, Grier was forced to deal with an internal cap and made decision not based upon on ice product but money.

He is quite safe for a couple more years at least. He has done exactly what he was hired for so far. Even if tanking is easy, being one of the worst teams the last 2 years was pretty much expected. I would say its pretty much expected to be bottom 3 in the best case next year too. Even a 20 point turnaround would be bottom 3.

However, yet another 20 win 50 point season is probably going to start heating his seat up. He has done the easy part pretty well so far. Tanking, selling and acquiring prospects. He has built up a good farm system. The hard part is converting that to actual success at the NHL level. Gonna have to at least show signs of it next season.

I don’t agree with the thread but I also don’t see how anyone can say Grier is doing a great job. The sell off and tank parts are easy. Anyone can do it. The real skill is getting back to being a good team. So Grier’s performance is still unknown.

It takes zero skill to build a losing team and finish last 2 years in a row.

I'm not expecting a Cup run next year, but a modest improvement with the Sharks being in the hunt for most of the season should be the expectation.

If that expectation proves to be too much for Grier, then he should be replaced with someone who could meet them.

Seriously, wtf are you talking about? They have an outstanding pipeline, the have a budding superstar at 1C and potentially at 1D should they win the draft and a 1G.. He’s done pretty damn good and that’s coming from a Kings fan!
In 2-3 years they’ll begin their playoff run and I think they can win a cup in 5-8 years similar to what the Kings did when they had their young core

Their rebuild is going really well, makes zero sense to fire him

That’s not even considering your premise that they know next seasons results before the season starts

Weird thread. He has the best rebuild going
I think it's a really good rebuild tbh but next year will will be the time to deliver imo. I would have made this thread about Chicago but I think they're one more year off. You can't keep losing forever. At one point you need to start producing and next season is going to be the time for that.
