I wanted Chychrun… I don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong about an NHL move. You literally couldn’t have picked a better fit in the entire league for the type of dman we needed

I was a little concerned that taking a guy that was #2 to Weber/Josi his entire career wouldn't have a smooth transition to #1. Also am skittish about taking guys that grew up in stable, established, strong defensive systems and dropping them into this type of team and expecting the same results.

I definitely couldn't have been more wrong. If anything Ekholm has come here and established himself as one of the premier #1 D men in the league and achieved a higher status for himself than he even had before. He's probably our most consistent performer, even including McDavid and Drai. Very rarely will he even be as bad as mediocre.

You can definitely see the pedigree. If I remember right he was even rated higher than 10th, but it was pretty much assured he wouldn't be coming over right away so it scared teams off.

I really, really hope he can build on this. Would be massive to have a real contributor for $1M or whatever it is this year and next.
He was the Nuke of his draft year. Top 5 in his draft year and fell just like Nuke

The layout hasn't changed much at all

although it was more "prospect-based" than it is today (hence "Hockey's future")

Lowetide used to post here...Tyler Dellow aka Mudcrutch79....who works for the Canes now...was one of the earliest adopters of analytics and a huge Oiler fan posted here all the time
You just blew my mind with that, I had no idea Mudcrutch79 was Tyler Dellow, how did I not know that.....

I remember Lowetide on here all the time and the "everybody vs. DashingSilverFox" threads that used to happen lol.

Haha I almost forgot about that poster, and it triggered my memory of maybe the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen posted on this board.

He was so addicted to being the Devil's Advocate and a contrarian that he was pimping the idea of picking Fowler ahead of Hall #1. The reason? "It's very rare that this type of player becomes available" or something to that effect.

Cam Fowler - definitely a unique and unmatched talent, lol.

I remember Bob McKenzie calling posters asshats in one of his posts which was pretty cool

so when McD is back, no way Skinner bumps down.
Nuge needs to ride wing with Henrique and Brown.
What's crazy is that Kane is coming back in a couple of months apparently so might need to bump Nuge down to the 4th line at this rate lol. You could put him on the 3rd line but still...

I mentioned this in another thread but with Podkolzin emerging as a real option for the Drai line (although we'll see if he keeps it up) the lineup is ridiculous when Kane returns. Two legit top 6 forwards are going to play on the 3rd line.

Skinner-McDavid-Hyman
Podklozin-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
RNH-Henrique-Kane
Brown-Philp-Perry

Janmark

Personally I'd switch Kane and Skinner because I think Skinner could fit a 3rd line better than Kane but that depth is absurd.

Gotta love being in a Wildcard spot at the start of November.

Half the Conference was sleepwalking through October. The only teams that got the memo were the Wild Knights and Jets.

Everyone else was like.. wuahhh?? uhhh season started?? what day is it??

Based on our team stats and goaltending stats, I think we are pretty fortunate to be one game above 500.

Only matched by the great Shiropov…er Shirokov.

I do hope DSF made his million from his hotdog cart 😂

Pretty funny last night, i went to the game with a casual Flames fan friend who hadnt been to a game in a while. There is usual Saddledome "Lets Go Oilers", "Oiles suck" chantting war.. my buddy asks "why do Flames fans just chant against the Oilers instead of for our own team? Seems like loser behaviour"

Told him I couldn't agree more, the perpetual little brother Calgary

I definitely disagree. Our stats are pretty badly skewed by some real stinker games against CBJ and WPG. Our advanced stats look great and 3 losses we have are against top 8 teams in the league right now (Carolina, Dallas, Winnipeg).

Team is doing just fine after short offseason and emotional let down of the cup finals.

Actually the team stats are pretty good, at least 5 vs 5. 5 vs 5 the Oilers are sitting fifth so far in xGF%. Now it's not a perfect stat but it does suggest that the early struggles have come from a combination of lack of finish and perhaps a combination of goaltending, some major breakdowns and some bad luck.

Well fought win. Good effort by the Oil all night.

- I see the talentless hack Flames are still in effect. Not one skilled play made. 2 fluke spray and pray shots from the blue line is all they had.
- 1GA was a high stick. What a bush League. They have eye level cameras set up for the sole purpose of figuring out high sticks and still can’t figure it out on replay. The puck was above the cross bar by half a foot but below 6’5” Mantha’s shoulders. Complete joke of a call but as expected in Bettman’s Clownshow of a League.
- Flames broadcast duo has to be the worst in the League. Kelly Hrudey has brain damage. And I’m not just saying that, I think he actually does.
- Sick hands by Skinner on that goal. It’s fun to watch his figure skating pivots out there he was always known for, can see him use it out there often. Dude can pivot with strength on a dime.
- Drais a BEAST. I hope McD is watching and thinking yeh I’m worth 14.5M at most like this stud.
- More awareness and playmaking on display by Podz to go along with his heavy game. Keep him next to Drai and Arvie, he looks motivated out there with the opportunity and will be our best chance of making him pop.
- Emberson showing more physicality and battle is nice to see. No egregious mistakes again. Hope the confidence keeps building.
- Hyms is back baby. Pulled off his bread and butter deke and looked great burying it.
- Vintage Nuge pass through sticks to set Hyman up on that goal too.
- How smart is Ekholm on that PP goal turning it right back into the Flames zone. Most defenceman just take that out and regroup.
- Credit where credit due. Nurse had a strong defensive game. Great sticks and in position all night. Critical play at the end to seal the game with a block, followed by 2 stick checks, leading to the EN goal.
- Philp showed his wheels this game. Didn’t know he could skate like that, didn’t see it game 1. With that skating and his IQ there’s got to be a player here. Derek Ryan should be load managed at this point of his career anyways, I hope they continue playing Philp as 4C.
- Stu was solid. Goal 2 was weak though.
- Still need to see more from Line 3.
- Kulak looks a bit slow this year.

I guess I mean actual stats lol. Our offensive, special team and goaltending stats are pretty bad.

I agree our analytics are good and a few bad games have obviously skewed the stats.

I guess on flip side could say that we have been unlucky that our record isn’t better as our underlying numbers are quite good.

Some may be luck, some of it may just be that teams go through periods where things go this way. One positive is that in the last 9 games they are 6-2-1 and could easily have been 7-2-0. Those first three games were not pretty for sure but they do have a significant impact on the current record.

That's 2.5 legit top-6 forwards on the 3rd line... Henrique himself isn't too far removed from that and still would be top-6 on some teams.

I couldnt agree more.
That was not only the best trade Holland made as Oilers GM but it might be the best trade this team has made since they traded for Chris Pronger.
