Post-Game Talk: I’m naming your first born Leon

I'm glad the Oilers won (and more about Draisaitl in my next post) and got the much-needed 2 points. This gets them a lot closer to clinching at least a Wild Card spot. I mean, they're not there yet, but they're close.

But... They AGAIN needed the novelty-overtime situation to defeat a non-playoff club, on home ice. This is not a good team at the moment. They have 5 regulation wins in their past 23 games (and only 2 of those were against playoff clubs).

I'm just remembering the most I've ever heard the name Zeke is in Farside cartoons. Seems like a name made for lampooning. Sorry in advance if any Zekes here.

Farside. Gary Larsen.

Some of the funniest, offbeat humour ever created. I have a couple of compendium books of his cartoons. Back in the day when I created PowerPoint decks on various topics, I’d always work a Farside slide into the mix.

About Draisaitl: I hope everyone can appreciate how utterly awesome this player is (forgetting about the other utterly awesome guy for a moment).

Draisiatl now has four 50+ goal seasons, which matches Jari Kurri for 2nd-most in franchise history. BUT he would almost certainly have five, and possibly six, if not for the Covid shut-downs and shortened seasons.

To put this into perspective, Draisaitl now ranks 12th in NHL history for most 50-goal seasons in a career. He's in a tie with Kerr, Goulet, and Kurri, all of whom peaked in the mid-1980s. He has more 50-goal seasons than Robitaille, Selanne, or Jagr.

If not for Covid, Draisaitl would probably have as many 50-goal seasons as Esposito, both Hulls, and Pavel Bure. And it's possible he'd have six, which is as many as Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux.

Discounting players who peaked in the 1980s, Draisaitl is easily in the top-10 players all time for most 50-goal seasons. Even counting the 1980s-peaking players, he'd possibly be top-six all time if not for Covid.

In my opinion, Draisaitl is the best shooter in the entire NHL. I just wish he would shoot more often, as last night's game demonstrates. He is almost certainly going to win the Rocket Richard, rather easily, this season (he would have won another one earlier but for Ovi's empty-net goals), but he takes fewer shot than most scorers. For example, Drai has almost twice as many goals as MacKinnon, but Nate has taken 60 more shots on net than Leon.

Then, making him even way more remarkable, he is often considered the best passer in the sport by opponents!!

It is exceptionally rare in the NHL that players are top-5 in both goals and assists at the same time. (Being #1 in both goals and assists is so rare that it has happened exactly 12 times in NHL history over 108 years by only six different players... Gretzky did it five times alone, and Howe and Lemieux twice.)

Three times already in his career, Drai has been top-5 in both goals and assists in the same season. (He's unlikely to do it again this year, but I don't rule it out either.) How impressive it that? It's damn impressive. Here's how many times random players have been top-5 in both goals and assists in the same season:
Maurice Richard -- 0
Messier -- 0
Brett Hull -- 0
Crosby -- 0
Ovechkin -- 0
MacKinnon -- 0
Kucherov -- 0
Bobby Hull -- 2
McDavid -- 2
Draisaitl -- 3
Mikita -- 5
Lafleur -- 5
Lemieux -- 5
Jagr -- 5
Esposito -- 8
Gretzky -- 8
Howe -- 11

So, while the usual suspects have done it several times, and some well more than Drai, you can see that since the 2004 Lock-Out, NOBODY matches Draisaitl in being top-5 in goals and assists simultaneously. McDavid has done it twice, but Drai has done it three times more than Crosby, Ovechkin, MacKinnon, and Kucherov COMBINED. It's unbelievably difficult to do this in the current era.

We are witnessing all-time greatness not from just one guy, but from two....

(...who, unfortunately, is playing with Arvidsson and Podkolzin...)

He’s the real f***ing mvp this year. Not that EN merchant in Colorado.

One of the biggest carry jobs in the NHL in a long time especially considering how off McDavid and Ekholm have been all year.
Not to mention that he leads the league in goals by 9 despite playing 4 less games than Nylander (almost as many even strength as Nylander has total) and is 5 points behind MacKinnon despite playing 4 less games and lots of those games with two guys, although playing better as of late, that are two of the least productive top 6 wingers in the league while also leading the league in game winning goals. This is one of the most obvious Hart cases in a very long time, it shouldn't even be close tbh.

What an amazing win last night. Leon deserves the Hart trophy no question. Nurse and Bouchard also were great along with Arvidsson, Podkolzin and Jeff Skinner.

Pickard was good.

Walman seems to be regressing the longer he stays with the coaching staff. Thought he would have more offensive impact.
He is terrible outside of some decent shot blocks. Basically Kris Russell in the o-zone. He must've been getting lots of secondaries in SJ because 30pts in 50games looks impossible, unless he's getting completely neutered by this coaching staff which wouldn't surprise me one bit. But even still, all he does is fire the puck around in the o zone, and now we're starting to see his defensive warts.

Wallman is playing meaningful games down the stretch for the first time in his pro career. No doubt he’s finding it a bit different than his time in Detroit and SJ in their March playoff runs. He’s learning here though. I’m not worried.

Why would he get neutered? Coffey is his coach. If anything he's being encouraged to make plays...that's literally why they got him

I think we’re safe for at least 3rd. If the Canucks win 9 in a row and we win 4 of our last 9 we are still in 3rd.

Without Drai the Oilers wouldn't be in the playoffs--they would be out already.

The rebuild around Mc-Drai will be an interesting one in the next few years. A lot of guys will be taking the exit ramp.
