Hypothetical: If Ovechkin reaches 950 or 1000 goals, is he top ten all-time?

My opinion is that Ovechkin ranks just outside the top 10 for now. Like 12 maybe.

As people who watched Ovechkin and Crosby play get older and younger fans become the loud majority...Ovechkin is going to rise up a lot. People who didn't witness this era in person will only see the 895+ and very reasonably ask, how can someone who is the greatest goal scorer in history not be at least in the top 10, never mind the top 5?

I don't mind that one bit as an Ovechkin fan.
It takes more than scoring goals to be considered top 5 all time.

There’s h
Ranked higher where?

* Won every trophy a forward can win in the NHL

* Broke that big Gretzky's record

* The best goal scorer of all time

* Incredibly durable. Outstanding longevity . Long-serving captain

Based on these accomplishments he deserves to be in the top 5 all time.

Plus - he still might surprise us in the near future. He's not done yet

There’s nowhere in the top 5 for him. Top 10 maybe.

Let's just do a rough list.

Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemieux, Crosby. Those are the top 5 in my list. Guys who clearly have an edge over Ovie. Beliveau, Hull, Jagr, Richard, Hasek, Roy, Harvey, Bourque, Messier, even McDavid is getting there. All of these guys are names of players where I think Ovechkin is behind at least some of them.

I'll put him ahead of Mikita, Esposito, Sakic, Yzerman, Lafleur, Trottier, Bossy, etc. But yeah I think he falls in the 10-15 range.

Take crosby out of top 5 and replace him with ovechkin.

Yeah that consecutive season PPG record.... Nothin.
I find it impressive, but it's one of those loophole records where a lower-tier player could cherry-pick and achieve it. All they would have to do is to play a certain number of games each season(such as one or two games) until they are ppg, then they just don't play another game.

I'd have Sid ahead of him. It isn't by an outlandish margin, but it is by a margin. Ovechkin broke a storied record, but we are forgetting Sid broke a Gretzky record this year too. It showed his remarkable consistency/greatness. Hard to go wrong with either, but from a PPG standpoint you have to still take Sid.

Beliveau? Richard? Hull? Borque? Messier? Harvey? 2 goalies??? Wtf?? OV is #8 for me. He has to be top 10. No one has done the things he’s done. And he’s done it all while helping his team and franchise be extremely successful. If the unthinkable happens and he suddenly wins a second cup this year and produces too…a lot of haters will have a lot of trouble keeping on hating.

You act like those names I mentioned are just 4th line pluggers. Beliveau for instance just never had a lull in his career. He retired after having a PPG+ sesason and captaining a Cup with 22 playoff points. Beliveau was 39 that year as well. I'm just saying, in Beliveau and Richard you have among the very best playoff performers of all-time. And Beliveau was great his whole career. I tend to put Messier pretty high, maybe higher than most, because he is a lot more than just points. But he's 2nd in playoff points all-time, no one is even close to him after that. You have to throw in his all around game as well when you factor him in. I wouldn't ignore the things he did. If you put Ovechkin ahead of him that's fine, I just made a list of legendary names who are right up there who Ovechkin is close to. He's ahead of some, but I put Beliveau ahead of him and Crosby as well. I don't even know, maybe even Hull. And this is not an insult to say this. He certainly flirts in the top 10, there is a good argument.

Top 5 in no order:

Gretzky
Lemieux
Orr
Crosby
Ovechkin

A Mount Rushmore is where it gets hard.

Upset Penguins/Crosby fans are trying to steal the show. Though it's over.

Caps are the best in the conference. Where is Pittsburgh?

Everybody is talking about Ovechkin and his incredible record. Crosby has been forgotten.

I understand your pain ... 😉

Right. Which is why I was confused you weren't also talking about a list of the top 5 NHL players ever.
Dude what? I know it's friday but some of us are still at work. We're in a top all time thread, what did you think i was talking about? Burgers?
