THe officials handled it poorly... THey basically took the hybrid rule and turned it into an automatic rule.
Countless times Kreider or Hags was going to beat their guy and the officials just blow the whistle.
IF it's debatable, they shouldn't be blowing the damn whistle but these NHL refs suck at everything.

It's bizarre because as someone that watches a lot of junior hockey, it's rarely ever an issue. Refs are always getting the right call on hybrid icing, which is saying something considering junior officiating is brutal for the most part.
Might just take some time for the NHL refs that are used to calling something one way for so many years to get used to it.
They've been giving the ties to the defender, when in reality it should be the tie going to the attacker. Think that would squash many of the botched calls.

One of those things that's better in theory than in practice.
The biggest beef I had with it these playoffs was the linesemen never seemed to be in the proper position to make an accurate call - often they were behind the two players racing for the puck and thus never were in position to get the look needed to make the right call....so they just called icing to be safe.
With SO many tight games these playoffs - throughout the leaugue - icings and offensive zone faceoffs can be huge, especially late, and you just CAN NOT have the inconsistency with this call as often as we saw this spring
