after the season he's had it'll be 9M+, ~9M-9.5M

that's a team friendly deal btw, if his agent really pushes he could get 10M, if KH works his magic maybe slightly below 9M, say 8.75M

Not sold yet on this guy I’ll need another year to evaluate. Also I don’t wear glasses or watch the games and have never played.

So looks like 6-8 years @ 8-11? I bet on 8y x 9.5 because 10m is weird.

No it wont. anything above 9.2 mil as an offer sheet and that would cost a team 2x 1st, 1 x 2nd, 1x3rd. No one is paying that for Lane.

Lane's contract will be around 8 millions and it will be for 4-6 years.

You think there is no team out there willing to trade 2x 1st, 1x 2nd and 1x 3rd for a rookie defensemen who's about to win ROTY and tied NHL records in the process?

Assumption is mother of all F ups...

Hutson is not eligible for an offer sheet after his current ELC due to the burning of one year (Article 10.2c of the CBA).

I personally do not think teams will offer anything above 9.2 mil.

You have to think which team has 4x 1sts to give, and are they interesting destinations for Hutson?
Are those teams willing to sacrifice potential 1st OA picks, back to back?

There’s literally no team that comes to mind that would want to do this. There’s literally risk is too high for the reward.

Are you ready to pay Lane Hutson $125.000 a game for the next 8 years?

If he takes anywhere near 10 mil AAV for the next 8 seasons (excluding next year), the habs will be overjoyed. Suzuki signed his contract prematurely (for himself). If he were to sign the remainder of his EFA years away this summer, he'd probably garner around 10-11 mil on the open market

I think we will see many teams' friendly contracts for the first wave, which will then be totaled in the second wave of contracts.

Hes eligible next year when he turns 22 in february.

If i understand it correctly
You understand incorrectly. Read 10.2c of the CBA.

See also PuckPedia. Sean Farrell is in the same boat, by the way, and so was Ryan Poehling.

Demidov too will not be eligible for sn offer sheet when his ELC is up.

Very much not the same.

It says you need to have 3 years of playing experience which qualifies as 10 games+ in the NHL per season from the age 18-21.
Hutson’s first year was burned, it doesn’t say if it counts or not.
But he’ll have 2 seasons + the year they burned.

Farrell signed it when he was 21 and never played enough to qualify

Phoeling only had 1 year out of the three that counted.

Gaudreau was 22 on his second ecl year so no bueno for him either.

And if his agent wants to play the game in its fullest they can refuse Hughes Offer and go to arbitration which will allow offer sheets either way

Make it look like 10M, but in reality 1M a season 😀

But in all seriousness, anything under 10M is a win for 8 years

What exactly can Hughes do to minimise the AAV?
Like, what's the absolute most you can front load a deal? Does it matter than the first few years are 'RFA years' when it comes to the year to year salary? Or is that a structure that some teams use?
I know there's limits to the year to year variation of salary amount. What's the max % you can give as a signing bonus every season?
I know he can't get a full NMC clause in the first few years, but they should give it to him for the latter years if it saves AAV!

Hutson is not eligible for arbitration and won't be until after his second contract, if he is still RFA at that point.

If you believe in the player then you go for the 8 years. Dubas messed up having shorter term contracts for the " Fab 4 ". We know what Hutson can do and we know what he cant do and what he needs in a partner.

The guy is brilliant. And yeah, entertaining to watch. If he played on another team we'd be crying how we dont pick guys like that. Hutson and a bigger defensive partner and we are set. Eight years without reservation.

I think he'll sign for 7.8M x 8 keeping the Captain as the benchmark. If hes going for $10M that would kill the rebuild, and kiss a RHD or 2C goodbye.
I think Lane will sign for Suzuki money for 6 years.

Renewals staggered:
2030 Suzuki (8 year deal, age 31)
2031 Caufield (8 year deal, age 30) AND Guhle (6 year deal, age 29)
2032 Hutson (6 years, age 28)
2033 Slafkovsky (8 years, age 29)
2034 Demidov (7 year second deal, age 28)
2035 Fowler (7 year second deal, age 30)
2036 Reinbacher (8 year second deal, age 31)
2037 ?? Hage (8 year second deal, age 31)
