Hutson's next contract

yes, because magic.
Yes, because this is how Hugo is building a winner.

CC agent tried to force his arm.. realized real quick - you wanna play for the greatest Franchise and birthplace of hockey, become disgustingly rich beyond your wildest dream player, in one of the top 10 cities in North America?
The difference between 50million and 70 million.. ? Go to Buffalo and enjoy your extra $20m.. this is 5 generations of wealth.. reality is they will nake that up by playing their entire careers in MTL.

If he wants to sign for $12M x 8yrs? Hasta la Vista little dude.
He's going to sign, and it's not going to be at a value that you want, probably. There is 0 chance that we trade him, he loves it here, Hughes is a former agent so he's a great negotiator, and his agent is a member of Quartexx. But it will be minimum 6 yrs x the Suzuki contract and max 10m x 8yr.

Ridix some of the takes in here.. lol..

He's going to sign the 8 year Suzuki special.. basically the core players will be taking one for the team if they have any ambition of winning a SC.
Each of them will be guaranteed $50+million each over this span. Why is this hard to understand? Wth needs more than $50million before you're 30?
He's in a different cap reality than Suzuki was when he signed his deal. He's got an agent who's going to be looking at comparables and getting his client paid a fair price which is his job.

MAYBE he signs for between 9 and 10, but if you think he'll go for less than 8 I think you're out of your mind.

We’ve been waiting decades for a true franchise-level skater—and now that we finally have one in Lane Hutson, people are hesitating over the cap hit? Talking about internal caps, Suzuki’s salary, or not wanting to “overpay”? Come on.

Give it 2–3 years and a $10–11M cap hit might look like a bargain. This is exactly the kind of player you lock up long-term without hesitation. Just pay the guy what he deserves.

I just my opinion.... but I think Suzuki set the standard, and IS still currently The Standard. Slaf has his warts still, just like Lane will.. CC bought in, Slaf bought in.. Guhle bought in, Evans bought in....

Lane himself would also like to buy in.. what a team.. if they can get Demi and RB to buy in too --- they would rewrite history.. beyond riches they would get for that "extra mill give or take"..

If im a star player young and with this core as Suzuki is the Captain. And a guarantee to build and join the core for 8 years.. here's $60,000,000USD... which is like $100,000,000 in Montreal.
What young star doesn't want in?

You work/play for the greatest run franchise (yes Hugo are) with a really cool and fun core ready to burst onto the scene.

His stock is already sky high while having a historic rookie season.

At this point, I don't think it hurts to wait.

The only thing that sets the standard for salaries is the salary cap.

Hutson will get market value because that's how the system is built.

It's the standard until it's not. Boston had an internal standard until pastarnak came in and blew it out of the water.

Suzuki compared to slaf and caufield is one thing. But Suzuki compared to hutson coupled with a much higher cap acceleration era is an entirely different animal.

Hutson is gonna make his money but we have to realize this kid is a bit of an autist. He actually is obsessed with the game of hockey and I think he deeply cares about winning and team success. Imo, hes not gonna break the bank but will be the highest paid player on the habs. My guess is 9.5-10AAV for 7-8 years.

Id trade him for a 2C or 2RHD who is willing to join the core and the Suzuki pay scale.. screw every single Agent- they are basically glorified Realtors..

Look no further than Colorado and Rantanen to understand how easy it is to trade a player.
I'm glad you're not the GM. That's one of the worst takes I've ever seen.

Not only you'd trade him, but you'd trade him for someone way below his value and potential.

I think there’s 2 options that can be the basis for a deal.

6yr x 8M. Makar/Hughes/Jones term with Suzuki Cap. If Lane asks for a shorter term, Kent imposes Cap. Or, if Kent offers Suzuki Cap, Lane counters with shorter term.

8yr x 10M. Not going above that at this point. … unless they see him as a 25 minute + player with Guhle and Reinbacher in the lineup. If he’s at 23 mins and Reinbacher comes in and plays 25, might have some Cap issues. Lane leapfrogs Makar’s cap hit, which is a feather in his cap.

the safest route for everyone is 6 years x8.

This allows Hutson plenty of time to develop under a safe contract, help the team while its in the window, establish himself as a top defender and claim a bigger contract sooner.

This contract will end when he’ 28 rather than 30 (if he went with 8) teams will give him more money and more term at 28 rather than 30 years old.

Does Hutson deserve more than 10M per year? Most likely but does Hutson would have made the season he had with a different franchise? Quite doubtful. I know it's weird to say that but I do believe we helped him elevate his game by giving him that much ice time + pp time. So in a sense Hutson landed in a perfect spot for him to become the player he is now. Just like Caufield, he has physical limitation and I think if we pay him around 10M per year for 8 years, it would be quite fair. He would be the 2nd highest paid habs player in history and we would be able to build a stronger core to support him. At 10M per year he would be already top 5 highest paid defenseman in the NHL. If he wants anything above that, it would be hard to justify it.

Offer the Suzuki contract. If he doesn't take it, let him dominate and show rest of the team including Suzuki that he is a 10M guy for real and deserves it. He's not 10M good yet, needs to earn it by showing he improved on his flaws.

People need to stop with these references to autism. As if you need to be autistic to be a genius/prodigy. It's extremely lame and inaccurate. Autism is marked principally with social cognition defficiencies, and Lane is NOT that.
