I hate the new trend of giving money and term to "unproven" rookies. Don't get me wrong, Slaf and Hutson are showing a high "promise" that their potential will materialize. Even so I feel it to be still a gamble. But I have to admit that Caufield is kinda proving me wrong.

If the kids don't pan out, you are at risk of massive cap issues.
I prefer it to the previous and still relevant trend of giving money for past services to players who can't play to that level anymore. I prefer to pay a player when he's still able to deliver than to pay a player when he's unable to deliver anymore.

Usually if you bridge a player and wait for him to be 24-26 to pay him he'll want to be paid a lot and for a long time which means you'll have to pay him big money until he's well into his 30ies. It's what will happen with Vlad Guerrero Jr because Atkins wanted to teach him riiiiiissspek.

The reason why those players who might eventually be able to ask for 10+ millions are signing for 6-8 is because they are being offered security at a time when they have no negociation power. If you let them get to negociation power it more often than not hurt see the Laffs and Oilers and very soon the Shatkins Jays.

8.5 for 8y this summer, probably close tu Suzuki's cap % at the time.
I also prefer to pay upfront a developping star, than paying for past services. (Do we need to talk about Gallagher's contract ?)
It also doesn't hurt if that means you get a discount in the last years of their contract, when you are ready to compete.

Less than two weeks ago people were predicting he'd sign under Slaf's number. Dream on!

Whether he signs this summer or next, Hutson will be signing for more than Suzuki's number. It's just a matter of how much more. Forget about the internal cap with Suzuki at the top, the cap is rising quickly and Hutson is a star.

I can see it being at the same cap % though (Suzuki), would make a lot of sense.

You’re going to be in for a surprise when the contract extension is announced.

Expect 6 years at 7.5 min, anything 8 years long the cap hit starts with an 8.

A quick look at Hughes, Makar and Faber are instant giveaways.

Hutson has no reason to sign for less. The benchmark is set and he’s delivering the goods.
Shit lol

At least he's a Quartexx client and not some known ballsqueezer like Darren Ferris. Plus his agent has spoken positively about the team and how they've accepted him. He also likely already has some relationship with Hughes.

I'm just hoping for an amicable process where he wants to sign long term, and follows the lead of Caufield, Suzuki and Slafkovsky.

The number will be what it will be. He should be worth a ton, but hopefully he doesn't squeeze us too much to get it. I'm not going to stress everytime he has a great game that the number is going up.

I mean Darren Ferris is a Quartexx agent. Ferris said that Kent Hughes himself is a shark.

Then it starts with an 8. We need to avoid those Leaf blunders with medium term deals for their highest paid guys. So far we have.

Hughes has done a very good job managing assets and the cap, I suspect it’ll be no different when it comes to Hutson’s extension.
