Actually people were saying Del Zotto was much better if i recall correctly.The threads that summer were epic. My God that was such a bad move. And the media were so bad too... Subban was getting compared to Michael Del Zotto.

If Hutson keeps up the pace, sign him this summer for a Slafkovsky-ish contract.
We want 8 years, forget about staggering length of deals etc, they are already staggered given when they were signed.

Don't think a bridge would have been a good idea in Slaf'a case. Like i said 7 millions wont be that much in 4 years, He'll be easily moveable if needs be, You bridge guys like Xhekaj, Barron, Struble, ...

I'm not sure about that one. We have to remember that he is not a complete D man and will always need sheltering. He's playing his rookie season at age 20/21 and is getting some serious offensive usage and ice time. I think his offensive zone starts are 62%+. I'm not trying to devalue him, more like a honest context approach looking at all angles beyond points.
This reminds me of some fans thinking Slaf will get $9M this past summer.
8x $7M or $7.5M. If Hutson wants to maximize, maybe the term gets dropped to 6 years (taking him to age 27 like Q Hughes). I know Hughes signed 3 years ago with a different cap but Hutson is a notch below him IMO.

Ideally he doesn't win the Calder and they give it to Michkov or Celebrini and we spare ourselves a couple of $$$$.
I also doubt his agent signs the deal right now before the end of the ELC but if he enjoys it here and gives the go, you give him the 8 years, there's no point to bridge him we would just shoot ourselves in the foot and sign him before RFA expires for much more...
That kid could literally never improve/progress and still be our number 1D down the line.

Explain how Slaf's contract at age 20 is awful. I'd love to hear your reasoning with some concrete evidence and data.

If you're drawing that conclusion now, then I'm not sure you understand when a bridge is a good idea or not.
I'm not sure a contract can be deemed awful before it kicks in.
Did you call Suzuk's contract awful like many did before it kicked in?
I agree we would like to see more from Slaf for those $$$$$ but he has the second half of this season and all summer to add some finishing to his game.

Because he hasn't earned that contract based on his performance. There was 0 reason to not bridge him. He's still far from being player worth that money.
Compared to Hutson who literally been improving defensively and offensively this season while playing big minutes.
Hutson is a Hugues like you want to lock while we still wonder where Slaf chairs is.
Simple as that. I don't know in what world Slaf is worth Suzuki money. Probably because it's been the norm with Jack Hugues and Hischier deal. They took a gamble but gambling is not always a good decision.

A team in a rebuild shouldn't bridge their players unless they have any doubt about their potential. He's worth Suzuki ish money in a world where agents go by cap % and not cap hits with 0 context tied to them. Age also comes into account.

Contracts should be awarded based on expected future performance, not past performance.

Not because you are rebuilding you gotta throw money as fast as you can , i disagree you on this. I also don't agree that Slaf is worth Suzuki . People underestimate Suzuki even tho he's no top center in the league as a MacKinnon etc. A bridge of 2 years wouldn't have made a difference with his age either

Nothing to worry about here. All he has to do is continue as he has, showing a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. He’ll get 8 years at whatever the market bears for his level of production.
Hughes has the willingness to lock in core players to long term deals and that’s what Hutson has shown to be so far. No reason to think it’s not sustainable.

Brock Faber is probably the best recent comparison, Hutson is better offensively but Faber is better defensively. He got 8 years @ $8.5M, if we could get Hutson signed to a deal similar to Slaf/Suzuki/Caufield I'd be happy.

Tough to say. He could absolutely light it up and then you're screwed because he starts demanding top dollar and it throws the whole order out of whack.
Yeah, you're paying a little more upfront but now you have a predictable set cost structure. And they're betting that Slaf will be a bargain down the road. That's the way it normally works. I think that deal was the smart way to go but you're always taking a chance with projecting future performance.

If the Habs want a discount they'll need to sign Hutson as soon as they can.

I never said he's worth Suzuki money and spoiler alert he's making less. At 8 years Slaf wasn't going to come cheap and once again you're looking at things the wrong way. Cap % is what negotiations are centered around now. That's the way you can compare apples to apples.
Also Slafkovsky will be probably improve his offensive numbers this year now that his play has picked up and he's back on 1st line. You'd be looking at low 8s if trying to lock him up for 8 years.

I don't see him signing before the cap landscape is set. I'm hoping it's an 8-year deal.
Quinn Hughes signed his 6-year deal in October 2021 after 41 points in 56 games and was for 8.9% of the cap ($81.5 million). If the cap is $92.5 million next fall, expect the same term to cost something in the area of $8.2325 million.
Sanderson signed for 8 years in September 2023 for 9.1% of the cap as of 24-25 (the starting year). If the cap goes to $92.5 million, that's $8.4175 million. While I think the Sens overpaid Sanderson, those are the benchmarks his agent is going to use.
HuGo could try to impose an internal cap that none of the guys not named Laine make more than $8 million, but that strategy would backfire imo. HuGo could try waiting until after next year. It will only cost them more.
