I think of Fast and Kotkaniemi as a combo replacement for McGinn. Foegele was replaced by Lorentz.

I wouldn’t say those moves made us better, but they haven’t hurt us at all. A little less offensive skill, but better depth.

He even missed a tap-in goal on a vacant net, so perfect replacement!!

Sure, there really isn't a direct comparison. I do see Fast as a smarter, more reliable Foegele. As much as I liked McGinn, I really don't think of his as an offensive threat.
I do think the changes have made the team noticeably better.

Fast and Lorentz were full time Canes last year.

Lorentz is a bit more lanky with a slower first step but they’re both awkward and half off balanced, all heart. Their hands and shot are the same. They play the same way. Lorentz has less skill but knows it. Foegele has more skill but thinks he has WAY more skill and tries stuff he can’t pull off. In my opinion it leads to Lorentz looking like a classic 4th line power forward who might someday be a 3rd liner because he plays smart and within his abilities, while Foegele looks like a frantic 3rd liner who makes things happen and will always make you think he might be able to give you more but probably never will.

Yes the issue though is that with Lorentz we don't have McLovin and we have Mike bumbling around the pronunciation every game.

I can see a slight comparison of play style, but to this point, Foegele is significantly better than Lorentz to me. They're almost the exact same age as well.

I think Foegele is slightly better with slightly more ability to be effective in the top 6 when called upon. That’s mainly what I meant by us losing a small amount of skill, as the rest is more or less a wash.

But yeah, you’d be hard pressed to find two players more directly reminiscent of each other. Whatever other changes we might make, in my mind Foegele/Lorentz was a 1:1 swap.

Either way, Lorentz was a hell of a draft pick. I thought it was a bust right at the start to draft what I thought was an overager with meddling point totals who could fight. I never saw him becoming a full-time NHLer. I had more hope for Clark Bishop, but clearly Lorentz is the better player. Absolutely coachable and fits his role well. It also helps this year that Stepan is a little underslotted as a 4th line C and can help set up his linemates.

I searched for this thread about 30 minutes ago and almost made this bump. He's certainly had some times where he's just so solid he's almost unnoticeable. But man, he played out of his mind in this series. There were a few times he'd make a play that I didn't even think he was capable of. And he's another clutch as hell Swede.
