Two of Fast, Stastny, or Stepan won’t be back (maybe all 3). Roster spots will open up. Guys like Drury, Rees, Pono, and Suzuki should have a chance to impress next camp.
Completely agree. It will sort itself out for the most part because we won't sign some of those guys, and also we'll trade some of these assets within the next month for the playoff run. Probably some of our Chicago guys or college players as they hold more value than the Russians and other Euros we've drafted recently.

As long as Stepan wants to play 13F, he'll likely stay. He plays a valuable position and is a RH FO guy. The other 2 are likely gone. I really like Fast but unless he takes a similar deal he doesnt stay. I dont see Stas staying.

I’ll be mildly surprised if they don’t finally bring in Puljujarvi as a Fast replacement.
Im really curious to see how much he will sign for. He certainly didn’t live up to his contract this year. Would probably be enticing for him to play with Aho, a guy he’s had lots of success with in the past, and try to get his career back on track. I’d take him on a cheap one year deal, for sure.

All hinges upon Jordan Staal. He never gets enough credit around the league. He is legitimately good enough that we can sign pretty much any 2-way NHL player with limited skill and they will look great on his wing.

On the one hand, I don't think Fast has looked great this year offensively, but on the other, he might be content to re-up with the Canes if he's cool with his current salary. I don't think he'll get a raise in flat cap NHL.

true on Fast. Some analytics group will suggest that Fast get paid like a decent 3rd liner after 3 years here, his analytical numbers are really good We wont pay that knowing what Staal does for that. We take a free Kapanen or do a 1 year low dollar Puljujarvi hoping to get some value out of those, knowing Rees or Drury are there if either isnt great. Im assuming it would be Kapanen as we like speed on Staal's wings.

True, but we also have something of a Brandon Sutter-vs-Jordan Staal situation developing around Drury. He turns 23 this week and while he's on track to have an NHL career, he's also tracking to be a replaceable cog. If rebuilding teams are interested in him as part of a trade for a more reliable and more seasoned contributor, I think you take those phone calls. Worst case, he goes somewhere and blossoms to become a 3C. I think we can live with that outcome if it means a more Stepan-caliber player in our lineup in the short term, while we're trying to make a Cup run.

Yeah I think we could moneypuck our way into an even cheaper than $2M replacement for Fast, especially if it's for one year. Puljujarvi is a pretty good buy-low candidate although we'd need to trade for his rights. A Fast-for-Poolparty rights swap is not far from fair value.
