Hurricanes G Frederik Andersen dealing with "medical issue"

ended Chris Bosh's career in the NBA, that's the only other time I've heard about it with a pro athlete lately... what other hockey players?

Devils Henry Tallinder was diagnosed with Acute Thrombosis in January 2012 (his last regular season game was on 1/17/12).

The hopeful original estimate was “6 to 8 weeks” but he didn’t make it back until the last 3 games (out of 6) of the 2012 SC Finals in early June.

Tallinder only played 25 games (out of 48) for the Devils in 2012-13 and then was traded back to Buffalo. He played 64 games for the Sabres in 2013-14.

He couldn’t stick with a NHL team after Buffalo, but he did play 4 more years in Europe, until he was 38 years old.

kinda strange how common these blood clotting issues are with hockey players lately

i'm not smart enough to have any other opinion beyond that but i don't feel like i hear about it in other sports

Alaric Jackson (offensive tackle) of the Los Angeles Rams had a severe blood-clotting issue that made him lose a season.

Best of luck to Freddy from a Blues fan; I hope he makes a quick and full recovery.

dupuis was the big name i remember, stamkos, kreider, timmonen, i'm sure there's plenty more i can't get off the top of my head
Wow, that seems like a lot of athletes. I wonder if it's something in NHL prescribed medication/pain killers. It feels like it doesn't happen as often in other sports... or maybe I don't pay as much attention to them.

Hope Freddie is OK and can return soon. Loved him in Anaheim.

I suffered a sports-induced deep vein blood clot in my left gastroc about 5 months ago. Thankfully it was a minor one (everyone is always still shook I was diagnosed) and blood thinners for 3 months did the trick. However there are much more serious ones that can spread to the lungs or brain and require urgent surgery if not identified and treated prudently.

Didn't know about Fleischmann, that's super scary.

Hoping Freddie makes a full recovery soon as possible - this makes all his other injuries sound like a cakewalk in hindsight.

Just had a major one in NCAA football last August. The starting QB for Wake Forest had some arm bruising after a workout and was quickly diagnosed with a blood clot under his arm. He was back playing football about 4 weeks later amazingly.

I’m hoping it’s a similar diagnosis of “effort thrombosis” where Andersen will be monitored for additional clots but could have a clean bill of health long term and even play again.

I remember Vokoun and Timmonen dealt with similar issues. Hopefully they caught it early and it sounds like it will be treatable for Freddy.

I hope Freddie has a speedy recovery from this issue. Blood clots are as serious as they come, and I'm glad this was caught in time.

Doesn't sound good. That sounds like how they'd describe a cardiovascular anomaly. If it was something else they'd say upper body, lower body, etc. I hope it's nothing Freddie, get well.

What's with all these blood clotting stories now? Could it be vaccine related, I'm genuinely curious
A) most of the hockey players listed here happened long before covid.

B) screening and understanding reasons for screening have greatly improved. I’m unaware that people are having more clots (aside from covid caused clots), more of a matter of they are more frequently being caught.

C) a recent study linked a rare clotting issue that happened to a very small group of people post vaccine I think to only a particular vaccine. Every case developed within two weeks of getting the shot.

D) clotting is a common issue with Covid itself.

That was the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which was the one most NHLers got since it was single dose. Still a shockingly rare effect (the number I found was 60 cases and 9 deaths out of 18 million doses), so I think it's pretty safe to discount that as a factor.

The use of ''imminently life-theatening'' makes me think it's an illness. I had flashbacks of how it started for Saku Koivu.

Whatever he has, best of luck to Freddy.
Yea, I don’t think it’s a hockey injury. I’m thinking along the same lines as illness, that would be something that needs to be addressed

That and the part where every case happened within two weeks of getting it.
