At first I was confused about the Latvia-Canada updates, I thought it's too early for the World Championships...then I remembered it was juniors. Thank goodness I don't have to give a crap about it now the way we all did five years ago :P

Ah I still love it, USA is trying to win back to back championships for the first time ever. Might drive up to Ottawa if they make the gold medal game.

For now they don't need to be a distant sheltered 3rd pair but come playoff time the top 4 needs to be rode SUPER hard with Dillon-Dougie getting pretty minimal time

And I think you ride Luke at times more than the others. He’s so effortless out there and that will allow him to eat significant minutes. So far this season the D pairs ice time has been quite evenly spread out. That should keep the top 2 pairs fresh enough to be able to handle a more significant workload in the playoffs without driving them into the ground.

The game appeared on ESPN+ and watching parts of it from the Canes feed, I noticed two things:

1. The canes pbp guy is pretty bad and we are pretty lucky to have Bill.

2. They were talking about how the Devils just got the bounces tonight off low percentage plays and if Carolina can get back to their game, they will be fine. And I was left thinking, isn't that literally the canes entire existence and gameplan? Low percentage shots from everywhere and try to capitalize on the inevitable crazy bounces that result?

Noesen with 4 sog's at 5v5 tonight. 8 shot attempts. Played 13 of his 14.5 minutes with Nico, so I'm just going to assume those shots came with Nico.

For the season Noesen is now pushing 10 sog's/60 playing on Nico's wing. 1.41 goals/60 and 2.5 pts/60.

Mercer by comparison was at 5.86 shots/60, .42 goals/60 and 1.25 pts/60 on Nico's wing.

Noesen did produce points with Haula. 1.12 g/60 and 2.23 pts/60, but was sub 5 sog's/60.

I get it as Dougie and Dillion together can be suboptimal, but I'm not sure it's worth tinkering with the other pairings over it
What they're doing currently works.

Luke-Pesce 1st pairing.

Dilllon clear number 6.

Finding Dougie a couple extra shifts each game with Siegs and Luke.

I think the only thing I'd tinker with is trying to get that death lineup of Dougie-Luke-Jack-Bratt out there at the same time more often to absolutely toy with and exploit matchups when possible.

They posted stats during the game on the Devils feed, and though the Canes are high in sog's they are also high in slot chances and other quality shot metrics.

The idea that carolina is merely a volume shooting team is not accurate.

Put the Dougie Hamilton vendetta away for 1 second I beg.

You'd think Kovacevic was the one with the 55% xgoals share tonight and dougie was the one with the 35% with the way the discussion continues to be around here.

Kovacevic has played a WHOPPING 1.5 seconds per game more than Dougie 5v5 in our last 16 games.

In that time Dougie has the better xGoals differential, better actual goals differential, despite playing with the clearly worse partner

But hey, let's all keep lying to ourselves about how bad dougie is.

We have 5 dmen playing at an elite level.

1 is a budding superstar
2 have done it for half a decade+
1 has been on and off year to year
1 has only done it this year

To be fair Dougie plays the much easier minutes.

But I agree with your overall point. People are looking for a problem when there isn't one.

I'd rather play tougher minutes with Siegs than easier minutes with Dillon.

I love how they've both played.

But it's gotten to the point where every single mistake by dougie is highlighted, every mistake by dillon is blamed on dougie, and every mistake any other dman makes is ignored or glossed over.

And the reverse for good things. Any quality play dougie makes is written off.

Dougie would have gotten SLANDERED in here for that aggressive play luke tried to make leading to a wide open shot in front. He would have gotten MURDERED if he let a guy behind him like Kovy did leading to the goal against.

I expect haula is the new forward scapegoat, after Cotter, and Meier before, and Palat before, and even Jack to start the year

In conclusion

Dougie is playing at a similar level as he did in 22-23 or 23-24 (outside of shooting luck)

The difference is the other pairings are now also elite.

It doesn't mean Dougie isn't elite. What other pairings do has 0 impact on how good dougie is.

Luke Hughes is generating an utterly ridiculous amount of offense while also being great defensively. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. DO NOT EXPECT THIS AS THE NORM.

Dougie is generating a ridiculous amount of offense while being average/below average defensively, and helping our PP go BRRRR. THIS IS STILL REALLY GOOD. It's what he's done his whole career. It's what we paid him 9 million to do, and what he does.
