Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Can't help but think about Jake Evans wisdom here. He did what he thought was best for him re-signing in a city he loves with teammates that value him. He refused the money narrative pushed by the NHLPA and the agents that it's all about the salary and nothing else and now he's happy about it. Rantanen loved it in Colorado, they wanted to keep him but he asked for for more money because of external pressure and now he's in a bad situation because of it.

I'm far from a millionnaire, maybe money gets to the head of those athletes and once they start to get cash they simply always want more, but I cant imagine a scenario in which I'd prefer to win 1M$ in a city or a team I'm not a good fit just because of ''the market''.

During the last two years, MacKinnon has definitely carried him a lot. There were seasons in the past 9 years with Colorado however, where Rantanen actually performed and produced better without MacKinnon.

MacKinnon and Rantanen have that special connection between them when they are in the ice together. They should have never been separated.
 
It's not only Mckinnon why Rantanen is struggling. Makar and COL's run and gun system are also big reason why he put up so many points, it was perfect spot really. Good player, but I personally wouldn't give him over $10m.

I cant imagine the cost nor the Hurricanes even sending him there... but Rantanen on Jack Hughes' wing would sure be a spectacle

I agree it's a small sample size and all the metrics show he's more engaged than he was prior to the trade.

But end of the day the production matters, and if a winger is making $12+ mil you're expecting PPG+. For the record, I hope Rants actually works out in Carolina because i'd rather him stay out East (unless he misses his BFF Mack :sarcasm:)

I mean I also remember when people thought Florida f***ed up because the team spun its tires the first half the season after trading for Tkachuk, and people thought Vegas made a terrible deal for Eichel when they missed the playoffs. Sometimes it takes a while for these great players to settle down in their new homes and for the teams to fully adjust to their style, and I strongly feel that is what is going on with Rantanen and the Canes right now.

Why is it a blunder? I would rather have a management team "try" to improve their team and take chances rather than stay pat. As a Canucks fan it is why I like our current management group, be bold. lol

If he’s willing to go to the market it can’t be about maxing the money, it’s about the fit/future outlook

I mean the blunder is in Necas not being in a deal for a guy with more team control when they had 2 years to figure it out. But that also depends on what all else was out there that was realistically available in a trade involving him. If the best other offer was around EP it's a mistake, if the best was around JT Miller then Rantanen was the best piece on the table. Though of course they always could have done what the Avs did with Duchene and just hold onto him until you get an offer that nobody could pass up.

Trying to put myself in his shoes, the situation is that he was planning on staying in Colorado, just needed to get the right contract. Never really considered any other option.

Then he's suddenly traded and with his newfound freedom, he simply doesn't want to be rushed into a decision. Even if it means losing that 8th year on his next contract, why not go to market in July, go through the process of meeting with multiple teams all incredibly eager to sign him and then make the call on his own terms and timeline?

I don't know but if I'm him, I'm going FA on July 1st and then I get a handful or so teams to choose from. Certainly not deciding all that right now, in the pre-TDL crunch time.

Or, maybe it really is just about the money.

then why was he so good when Mackinnon was injured for lengthy periods of time?

People are seriously overvaluing a 10game sample in a mostly defensive system.
He went from a free wheeling offense to structured defense, in a shock trade no less, lots of players would have an adjustment period

They lost Rantanen and Necas. Could be salvageable if they can find a third team to give up a player like that but wow that's risky.

Waiting for the summer to trade Necas seems like it was the winning play.
