Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Im late to the party just a couple of quick questions.

1. Which teams can fit Rantanen into their cap at this point into the season? I assume non contenders who might be interested in Rantanen would just wait to see if he hits UFA. This would take away all risks of having to pay a ransom for him and or Rantanen not re-signing as well.

2. What are the Hurricans looking for in a return.
If the Canes retain another 50%, any team could fit him in at $2.3M for a playoff run

I’d say price wise, a 1st is a prerequisite. Likely a young roster player or good prospect + roster filler. Even as a rental he should return a haul if they actually trade him.

Pretty much this... and with this year not looking to be a great draft class I wonder if the Canes go a bit outside of the box and don't require the 1st and opt for a combination of other things or request a 2026 instead

Rantanen has Dallas,Tampa or Florida painted all over him. I don't think he has any interest playing Brindamour grind hockey. I think this will be the year Aho will completely give up on Carolina too. Carolina doesn't care about losing Necas though because they seem to value grinder players like Seth Jarvis over him anyway.

Your assessment of Hurricanes players and their playing styles + skillsets is truly bewildering

Necas is skill player and Jarvis is grinder who score dirty goals mostly. Carolina clearly value Jarvis more and couldn't care less about Necas.

Why would Canes retain on an elite player?

Plus dont they want cap space themselves since they are contending. I dont see them wanting to have dead cap space.

Because of if they retain, they get more loot and more teams, with limited cap space, could bid for his services.

They have all the cap space in the world this summer. If they deal Rantanen, I see then as punting this season anyway, so why not get as much for him as you can. This year’s version of the Canes is a playoff team, but at this time, I certainly wouldn’t call them contenders.

They shot their shot going after Rantanen, but it looks like it won’t work out. Time to cut bait imo and recoup what you can.

What would the cost be for the Canucks. They have alot of cap space so retention is not necessary. Canucks should be all over this if they can be given permission to speak to Rantanens's agent about an extension before the trade.

Latest agent poll. Not very nice things to say about Carolina's front office.

Lebrun Athletic article today says there’s zero evidence the Canes have called a single team looking to move Rants. A couple of teams have checked in just to see, but the Canes have said the whole time the focus is signing him and Lebrun is reinforcing that those words aren’t just lip service but the actual truth.

This whole thread is baseless speculation, the Canes aren’t shopping Rants. They haven’t given up on anything, Rants hasn’t said no to them. He just got there and they’re just settling in with him.

Maybe something will happen before the deadline but to this point absolutely nothing has happened to suggest the Canes are trading him or giving up. It would be much more in the Canes lane to just keep him and let him walk so they have the cap space for the summer unless something that makes the team better presents itself.

This.

It's all media clickbait. It'll get done.

also LOL that leafs could trade for him. Everything is ALWAYS about the leafs lmao

steamy nothingburger from dredger

"it's too soon to say" so he just frames standard negotiations as uncertainty to stir the pot
Even the insiders are frustrated .they really havnt much to offer
Leafs insider must trade notes to see who will be the fool for the day

Carolina needs hockey trade. Their window is open.
