Realistically, what do they think they are gonna recoup that isn't already lost? They are not going to get a player who can help contribute today. Great get a late 1st. You remove a point point player from your lineup and kiss any chance at seriously competing for the title this year goodbye, while strengthening another team.

I think if he doesn't want to sign regardless of the amount they need to at least kick the tires on a center prospect with top 6 potential. Probably not a blue chipper for a rental but perhaps if a sign and trade could be in the works then a higher end center. That is the teams single biggest need. If that's not out there then run with him the rest of the year and maybe Raleigh rubs off on him a bit more and he decides to stick around.

Why would this season be the Canes last legit shot at a Cup?

Aho is signed through 2032.
Svechnikov is signed through 2029.
Jarvis is signed through 2032.
Slavin is signed through 2033.

That's a top line and #1 D signed through the rest of this decade. Add in $38.7M in cap space for next season to replace 9 UFAs, and you have a lot of opportunity to add to that core in the offseason (2C, another top 6 wing if Rantanen does not sign, G to pair with Kochetkov) while bringing in some good prospects (definitely Nikishin, probably Nadeau, maybe Morrow, maybe Unger Sorum.) And maybe you add in whatever prospect you get for Rantanen if you do flip him.

I can see the argument that this season is a retooling one after last season's window "ended" due to all of the talent that left. But this season is far from the ending of a window. If anything, this season has been surprisingly good overall, with Carolina competing for the second-best record in the East behind a shocking run by Washington.

This season isn't the end of the window by a long shot.

At the end fo the day if they traded 16 months of Martin Necas for 4 months of Mikko Rantanen + a better shot at the title for the 2025 playoffs, it's not the end of the world.

Plus if they keep him, and say he gets to know the area and gel with the group and they go on a run, it might be enough for him to want to settle down in Raleigh and re-sign in the summer so long as the money is also right. And if he doesn't? Oh well life goes on what is done is done.

I don't think its our last chance, we have a few key reinforcements coming in next year that should reposition the defense to being at least among the best in the league again for a while as well as some promising forward prospects that will provide more offensive punch than we are used to. This year was always looked at as being the lull before those players showed up.

There may not be any out there in which case keep him and see what happens. But they'd be doing themselves a disservice to not be at least asking (assuming he won't sign). And he may not need to be a rental if they could swing a sign and trade.

Christ, just 4 days ago this place was absolutely convinced that the Canes were putting him back on the block because they have buyers remorse and don't want to sign him. On Saturday report comes out that there is a 9 figure offer on the table for him, and that was dismissed and then last night Weekes says its between $13m and $14m aav, which would potentially be the most expensive contract in league history, and we're treating it as if its a done deal that he's walking?

Cmon, guys. This is getting silly. Nobody here knows anything, ESPECIALLY when it comes to how the Canes operate. Too cheap to match the Aho OS, unwilling to sign 8 year deals (Aho, Slavin, Svechnikov, Jarvis, Kotkaniemi), unwilling to trade for a rental (Guentzel), unwilling to buy players from other teams (Jarvis), too cheap to pay Brind'Amour on a contract extension (5 year deal signed immediately after), unwilling to offer top money to a player (current reported Rantanen offer). Everything this site has ever known for a fact about this franchise has always been deemed very shortly after as wrong.

Imagine the idea would be assets gained for Rantanen + for Pettersson. If they can’t sign Rantanen, I can’t say I’d be too upset with that outcome .

This was definitely more Sakic's doing than anyone else's. They were talking contract extensions and Rantanen's camp either tried to use leverage inappropriately or just plain f***ed around and found out. There was no reason to trade him. Like not even a little. I have to imagine it was because Sakic settled on a number he wasn't budging on. When Rantanen was put on the market, Carolina had the best offer. And their logic was they'd either upgrade from Necas or get one hell of an offer for Rantanen

f*** checking with Rantanen's agent. You just ask Sakic what Rantanen wanted before you offer Necas at all. Otherwise Rantanen's agent gets wind of it and raises holy hell about how Sakic will just trade you to Carolina to get you to sign for what he wants

Colorado didn't want anyone talking to Rantanen at all for whatever reason. Carolina was the only one willing to give up a package of that quality without an extension. I bet there would've been a bidding war for an extended Rantanen.

Or Colorado knew how crazy Rantanen's demands were and didn't want to scare teams away.

Honestly everyone needs to chill with this topic until we get closer to the deadline. That’s the next real milestone in the process, and we have no insight whatsoever into the thinking that’s taking place behind closed doors leading up to the decision whether to move forward with him to the playoffs.

Once we get to within a day or two of the deadline it will quickly become much more clear what’s going on. Until then, all we’re seeing is media keeping the clicks going with broad speculation like what we’re doing on this forum. There’s really nothing left to do but wait.

Without an agreed on extension every team should look at him as purely a rental. Don't pull a Carolina and trade or him and find out he has no interest in signing after and/or later.

If he's purely only shopped for his rental trade value I'd question why Carolina wouldn't just use him as their own rental.

Colorado didn't want to give him more than than McKinnon ($12.6AAV) on an 8 year deal. Now he's gonna go back for less money AND only on a 7 year deal?

Colorado isn't even in the position to offer him the deal they originally were (regardless of years) as their cap situation hasn't gotten any better... it's gotten worse since they now have Necas and Drury on the books and Necas is gonna be due a big raise in a year. Makar needs a mega contract in 2 years... Blackwood starts making $5.2AAV next year as well.

I wouldn't see it that way, especially knowing now that it's come out that there was no way that Necas was ever going to sign a long term deal.

In the last few years we've been the bridesmaid for Eichel, M. Tkachuck, Timo Meier and long term for Guntzel. It was incredible the day that we got a top 5? 10? winger in the league on our team. As forwards go we've needed a gamebreaker and we finally got one. If he leaves, he leaves, but I will give our management group kudos for continuing to try to get that game breaker on offense. Could they have done better with Guentzel? Absolutely. If it comes out that we offered 13.5x8, and he chooses free agency, you can't be mad at that. They learned from their mistake, they tried again, and it still might fail.

Florida is an amazing squad top to bottom. I mean they are the defending world champions for a reason. Tampa and now Washington are both great teams with championship pedigree. The NYR has given us hell in the playoffs. And that's just the East. We have to do everything we can to get past them. Winning a championship is hard plus you need a lot of luck. That's why you bring in someone of his caliber and roll the damn dice.

Fair, but at least Necks was signed thru next season. So you'd have him for two playoff runs at minimum.
