Sucks for Carolina but it's better that they cut bait especially since he hasn't really settled in there by most accounts.

Really?

People knew the risk sure, but barely anyone was saying it was a great piece of business for the Avs which it was. The Canes got all the praise.

I recall some people saying that's a lot to give up for a rental who's been accused of being lazy and uninspired at times. Basically Carolina HAD to re-sign him to have a chance of winning this trade and put themselves in a position where they almost have to give Rants whatever he wants.

He would have received 90M+ just by sticking with the Avs. Instead decided to ask for more and was traded. You have to think the number is really damn important for Mikko.
The fact that there was little to no negotiation taking place leads me to believe the Avs made an organizational decision that they didn’t want one of their top 3 contracts for the next 8 years be a relatively one dimensional winger on the back half of his career. I don’t think this was just about a difference of 1-1.5M AAV.

I think we'll see in time either way. It could easily be an agent pushing for the most for his client (and for himself) and making an error. Or it could be Rantanen only wanted to live in one of a handful of places.

Reports suggest that the Avs were not going to break 12M for Rants. Good call imo, especially when a trade like this was available.

Still 11.75M x 8 or something like that is 90M+. Mikko just wants the bank and he has every right to ask, the Avs management were just not interested.

He seemed very upset and taken back by the trade and even came out after saying he'd have signed a discount. I think his heart is still with Colorado and I think there's a good chance he's back there for July 1st.

Without an agreed on extension every team should look at him as purely a rental. Don't pull a Carolina and trade or him and find out he has no interest in signing after and/or later.

If he's purely only shopped for his rental trade value I'd question why Carolina wouldn't just use him as their own rental.
Did rantanen say he didn’t want ant to sign in Carolina? Or is it ALL just speculation from click bait artists?

Canes need a #1 C.
Nothing against Aho - he is one of my favourite players - but you need at least a 2nd C like him…and a replacement for Staal.
As a winger…which centres would you want on your team?
Aho, Kotkaniemi, Staal,
McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins or
Barkov, Reinhart, Bennett, Lundell?

If we extend his question to D-men…Makar, Hedman, Hughes are worth to be thought about, too.

I don‘t know which kind of weather Rantanen prefers, but quite a few Florida and California over Canada and the NE.

It could be that he wants to live in a big city like NY, LA, Chicago.

Or in a hockey market like Toronto, Montréal, Minnesota?

If it really is about money, Canes should sign him hands down…back to square one…they need a #1 C.

Because as a forward you prefer an offence first oriented team. In Carolina he will score 20 goals and 40 points less than he did in Colorado.

If he is available,I can see Vegas and Edmonton very interested, although I don’t know what they can offer aside late first round picks in a distant future.
For me Toronto should give up a prospect or two to get him and break the bank for Doughty or vice versa.

I think there’s a chance Rantanen damages his own value substantially

-doesn’t take colorados deal which included sharing the ice with two goats, ends up shipped out, struggles a bit
-goes to 4 nations, struggles a little bit
-perhaps gets flipped again. What happens if he struggles a bit more?

no doubt somebody will pay him but I think there’s a chance any hope of a draisaitl deal is gone - especially if he doesn’t outperform in Carolina or an addl team.

Should have taken Colorado’s deal. Agent got played, hurt his client possibly. 14+ mil aav should be reserved for guys who don’t struggle to produce. Sharing the ice with goats maybe cost him 1.5 mil aav per year over 8 years. Looks like he might take that same pay hit without the whole MacKinnon and Makar part. Extra potential for damage in that Colorado’s system is really well designed for big shooters, whereas there’s a chance his new team plays much differently, perhaps doesn’t exploit the big body the way MacKinnon and Makar can. A lot of Rantanen’s +/- comes from him just standing there - being the pick for MacKinnon or Makar. People wanna dump on hyman for being a pp merchant but whatever big body plays up in Colorado has the easiest hard job on the planet.

Rants probably wants to wait for the off-season to see what's out there and then pick the destination himself. Can't blame him for that. Meaning he likely won't sign with anyone else either as of this moment.

This is really tricky. What is the price of a star winger as a rental? I mean, there are really no comparables from recent memory that I can think of. Not to mention after losing Necas they still need help on the wing themselves and a boost for the playoffs.

Unless there's a perfect trade out there that hits all the boxes (unlikely), they probably have to do a series of trades to get it all right.

But if you can't get the right player back for him, or the assets you get back don't turn into the players you want, then I wouldn't be shocked if they double down on this year and just go for it with Rantanen, then worry about the rest later.

Rantanen was absolutely best position to rack up points in COL. He's playing with fire for not signing contract ASAP. I honestly don't think COL would take him back at $10m, they don't like his lazy style of playing.

This is crazy, Carolina should have pushed Colorado to sign and trade him and if he didn't want, then move on to another player. IMO Knowing that Rantanen is not willing to sign now, even if they flip him they're not going to get back what they paid to acquire him in the 1st place. Crazy
