As a MTL fan, I freaking hope not.....that top6 would be the best in the league. We could in the offseason. If Bennett leaves, move Lundell up to 2C and sign Rantanen.

Yeah, I have no idea what the hell Carolina is thinking if they trade him. Do they have zero faith in their appeal to free agents? If so, they shouldn't be freaking trading for them. Instantly trading Rants if he refuses to sign after he has barely experienced the team and location would be madness. Of course he wants to figure out the team and location first...so keep him for a playoff run and see where things settle...trading him now would be ridiculous -- and an exceptional level of incompetence that would indicate Carolina made a horrific mistake making the trade in the first place.I mean...sure...they probably would want to trade him if he is explicitly saying I don't want to be here.
Then again, he's played 6 games with his new team, half the team has been sick, he missed a game and the 4 Nations break happened shortly after the trade.
Maybe, just maybe...give the dude a bit of time to settle? "He's played 6 games and he hasn't signed yet what is wrong!!!!!"
I fail to see how this is even news at this point. There are some many "this isn't a report", "I am not saying", "of course we have to see what happens", "some around the league are saying" stupid jargon qualifiers here to make pure speculation seem like something noteworthy. He even says, "this is a lot of speculative talk".
I heard that if Rantanen doesn't eventually settle and tells Carolina he won't sign that they may want to trade him!
No shit, sherlock.
What here has actually come from Rantanen, Rantanen's agent, Carolina's FO or anybody?

He seemed very upset and taken back by the trade and even came out after saying he'd have signed a discount. I think his heart is still with Colorado and I think there's a good chance he's back there for July 1st.
Without an agreed on extension every team should look at him as purely a rental. Don't pull a Carolina and trade or him and find out he has no interest in signing after and/or later.
If he's purely only shopped for his rental trade value I'd question why Carolina wouldn't just use him as their own rental.
Are they close enough to a Cup team to afford to keep him as a rental, like with Geuntzel last year? After doing it last season with Jake Guentzel (trading for an impact winger and failing to sign him) they probably shouldn't have done a blind side the player trade and actually seen if a sign and trade was possible. Now they are in the do we keep him and lose him as a free agent back to back years like Guentzel or try getting assets back.
I think they should keep him as their own rental. I mean why wouldn't you at this point. I could see the concern that could grow with free agents leaving the team. Not really a good selling feature losing impact players off the roster.
You think potential acquiring teams are going to base their valuation of him on 6 games and a mid season tournament vs almost a decade of being one of the best wingers on the planet?Who will want to trade a first round pick, a very good prospect, or more for a player who has underperformed since his trade as well as at the 4 Nations tournament and who really seems to want to test the free agent market. It's unfortunate for Carolina....
I just don't get why Carolina wouldn't just keep him as an own rental. The only way this makes sense to me is if they're trying to move him for a controllable roster player

All this makes no sense, if you believe the rumor. If you ignore the rumor there’s nothing odd about the situation at this point. Carolina knew his asking price before trading for him. Carolina had an idea if he wanted to extend before trading for him. Could something have changed? Sure.He seemed very upset and taken back by the trade and even came out after saying he'd have signed a discount. Ooh! I know this one! It’s Rob Blake! What do I win?Who will want to trade a first round pick, a very good prospect, or more for a player who has underperformed since his trade as well as at the 4 Nations tournament and who really seems to want to test the free agent market. It's unfortunate for Carolina....
That was how I knew the avs were onto somethingThe general consensus was that the Avs were on crack trading Rantanen and that the Canes were brilliant.

He would have received 90M+ just by sticking with the Avs. Instead decided to ask for more and was traded. You have to think the number is really damn important for Mikko.I know people will look at the dollar amount but it isn't as important here. It is a big change moving everything you have and setting up a new life 1700 miles away at the drop of a hat. All the friends you've made over the past decade and more, no longer around. If you have a choice, you'd not be far from that life, or you'd pick a place that you'd love to live.
It actually must be very tough for the partners, especially those without family in the country who don't know anyone and will be alone for a lot of time whilst the player is away.
Rantanen will get $90m-$100m anywhere he goes, so it is very plausible the other things are more important than $5m-$10m.
