My buddy in Saltair BC often posts pics of his catches, right off shore from his backyard. Talk about a fish market. Fresh Ling cod; prawns and crabs are also plentiful less than half a mile from shore.

Right from his backyard? Sounds like a dream.

What’s Saltair, a remote community?

Thanks! Those big girls get released, but I do keep a few of the smaller eaters here and there.

Why are the big fish released? Personal preference, the law, other?

Well he does have to get into his boat, however at low tide, there are oysters and clams for the taking and digging.

Saltair is a small place between Ladysmith and Chemainus on the East coast of Vancouver Island. Best place in Canada imo, or one of the best.

Sounds like you know it real well. Great spot for someone in here to check out if they’re close by.

Multiple reasons. They have more contaminants, they don't taste as good, and releasing big females supposedly promotes keeping big fish genes in the population.
Also, those fish are 10 - 25 years old. Certain amount of respect for a fish that has avoided being hooked for that long. Take a few pictures, release, and get a replica made out of the photos.

So the smaller catches have the same contaminants but on a smaller scale. I thought we had a lot of non polluted lakes in Canada.

I think it applies more to large rivers like the St-Lawrence. Cleaner now than years ago but still iffy in certain areas.

Agreed 100%

Yeah pretty much. And because of bio-accumulation toxins are found in higher quantities as you move up the food chain. Perch for example are a small fish and have fewer contaminants than say walleye who predate on perch. Older fish have more time to accumulate more toxins.

The water quality in the river has improved in the last 20 years, but there are still sediment toxins (heavy metals mostly) on and in the bottom.

I guess that explains why some will take the trouble to travel really far to avoid polluted waters.

I hope so too, my favorite kind of fishing is ice fishing!
I’m a pretty big guy and my buddies mess around with me when we ice fish. They tell me that there is no way in hell they are standing next to me with a hole in the ice. I’m the guy who brings his grill on the ice and cooks Italian sausages and peppers. Drives everyone crazy.

There are 2 types of ice fishermen/women. Ones that are grimacing because they hungry and cold, and those standing in front of a charcoal grill with 10 sausages, onions, bell peppers, and a smile. Buns and condiments too!

I have this memory of when I was 16-17 I was out on the lake alone with my 10 brimballes and my own minnows. I just had discovered weed so I was probably high. At the end of the afternoon it was getting darker and the clouds started to come down. The perch came back and I soon I was running back and forth unhooking fish, fetching minnows and cleaning the holes because it just had started to snow. Me and my lines were just wrapped in sunset-orangey snow mist. I remember I caught a 36" pike that evening. What a life.

Trust me, the best part about ice fishing? Is the food. I take that back. The best part of the ice fishing season? When there is a front page article, in the local newspaper, about the authorities having to coax a bunch of 60-70 year olds off of thin ice. LMAO Oh, and believe me, they were catching fish before removed...
