My buddy in Saltair BC often posts pics of his catches, right off shore from his backyard. Talk about a fish market. Fresh Ling cod; prawns and crabs are also plentiful less than half a mile from shore.

Outstanding! Thanks! Those big girls get released, but I do keep a few of the smaller eaters here and there.

Multiple reasons. They have more contaminants, they don't taste as good, and releasing big females supposedly promotes keeping big fish genes in the population. Why are the big fish released? Personal preference, the law, other?
Well he does have to get into his boat, however at low tide, there are oysters and clams for the taking and digging.Right from his backyard? Sounds like a dream.
What’s Saltair, a remote community?

Saltair is a small place between Ladysmith and Chemainus on the East coast of Vancouver Island. Best place in Canada imo, or one of the best.
Also, those fish are 10 - 25 years old. Certain amount of respect for a fish that has avoided being hooked for that long. Take a few pictures, release, and get a replica made out of the photos.Multiple reasons. I think it applies more to large rivers like the St-Lawrence. Cleaner now than years ago but still iffy in certain areas. So the smaller catches have the same contaminants but on a smaller scale. I thought we had a lot of non polluted lakes in Canada.

Yeah I spent years in that area. I know of three or 4 posters here from the Island, they would agree.Sounds like you know it real well. Great spot for someone in here to check out if they’re close by.

I hope so too, my favorite kind of fishing is ice fishing! This is a beautiful thread. I hope that we keep it going once the season starts, it might be the one bright spot on all of hf habs.
Thanks man! Thought I was going incognito there lol. Since you said hi and this is a great thread I might as well contribute with a couple chunky gold nuggets.

I’m a pretty big guy and my buddies mess around with me when we ice fish. They tell me that there is no way in hell they are standing next to me with a hole in the ice. I’m the guy who brings his grill on the ice and cooks Italian sausages and peppers. Drives everyone crazy.I hope so too, my favorite kind of fishing is ice fishing!
There are 2 types of ice fishermen/women. Ones that are grimacing because they hungry and cold, and those standing in front of a charcoal grill with 10 sausages, onions, bell peppers, and a smile. Buns and condiments too!
Trust me, the best part about ice fishing? Is the food. I take that back. The best part of the ice fishing season? When there is a front page article, in the local newspaper, about the authorities having to coax a bunch of 60-70 year olds off of thin ice. LMAO Oh, and believe me, they were catching fish before removed...The latter ones sound like tailgaters, lol.
