Howie Rose

For those that were not at the game last night and watched on TV, did they say anything about why Howie did not do the game? When there were mets-isles conflicts during this past week, he always did the Isles games, so I was shocked that he was with the mets for a meaningless early regular season game and not with the Isles for one of the most important games in 5 years.

I am sorry, but IMO Jiggs is not even in the same class as Howie as an announcer. In all honesty, I actually find Jiggs unbearable to listen to now.

Question from a Ranger fan perspective:

I am one of those strange Ranger fans that is also a diehard Mets fan (something in my DNA forced me to choose losing teams as a child), and as a result it is impossible for me to dislike Howie Rose no matter what organization he's working for; he's the voice of my childhood. I'm used to hearing a lot of animosity towards Howie from Islander fans for having Ranger sympathies/not being pro islander enough. Is this segment of the fan base simply composed of nonbaseball fans (Im making the assumption that most Islander fans are also Mets fans)? or are they able to separate their associations with the Man's voice? I know I can't do it.

Anyway, just a question. I come in peace.

I thought I was the only one :handclap:

Though, I think he's too smart to be a color guy, if that makes sense haha

They didn't. Unless they said something during the pre-game which I didn't see.

I was a little surprised and disappointed Howie didn't call the game last night. Jiggs and Eddie were great back in the 80s, but nowadays you can tell that Jiggs has lost a little off his fastball. Maybe its what happens when you only call a few games each year.

I think Howie's shown a ton of passion towards the Isles (without getting too much of a homer about it) so I don't know why anyone would have animosity towards him at this point.

(mets/isles/jets fan here, aka the worst combination)

I never noticed Howie not being pro-Islanders enough. And as a Yankees fan since the early 70s I was always of the opinion that the Mets had the better broadcast crews over the years, especially today.

I'm only concerned with the quality of the announcers. Howie is aces. Both sports.

Howie was in Minnesota last night with the mets.

Thursday when the isles were in Boston, Mets were off, no conflict.

I don't find Jiggs bad at all, but he has just lost a step compared to what he was in 1993. Maybe he would be better if he was doing more than just a handful of games a year. No disrespect to Jiggs, I enjoy listening to him, but at this point in 2013, Howie is just better.

Howie is good but so is Jiggs when Howie is away

Good to hear the legend a few nights ago

Because I grew up in the 80's listening to Jiggs, then hearing Howie call the Ranger games on WFAN, I still to this day hate hearing Howie call Islander games. WHen jiggs calls the games it reminds me of the good old days especially now that we have Islander uniforms again. Howie annoys me, his ranger fan, his voice, everything. I never came across an anouncer that annoyed me in the least bit. Howie? I look at him as that annoying Ranger fan in junior high school that calls Islander games now because the RANGERS own MSG and the Islanders didnt care enough to prevent it from happening.

My goodness, if this post doesn't embody the term "living in the past", then I don't know what does!

Lemme guess, you're bummed about the move to Brooklyn too...

It's always a treat to hear Jiggs call the odd game here and there. But let's face it, it's strictly for nostalgic reasons. He's clearly not the announcer he used to be, and understandably so. If we were to tune into watch a game and the announcer of that game called the game like Jiggs currently does (AND coupled with Butch), we'd think it wasn't a very good broadcast crew.

Ranger fan or not, it's clear to me that Howie cares a lot about the Isles and that is really all that matters to me. I could care less if he is a Ranger fan first, it's obvious he wants to see this team succeed and that he can feel the pain of the fans.
