Putting politics aside, this discussion is strictly a performance question of Team Quebec at the World Championship.

There are 50 players from Quebec currently in the NHL and some are in the playoffs right now, so excluding the ones in the playoffs, here's what a current Quebec team would look like in this WC.

Huberdeau-Brassard-Dupuis
Tanguay-Bergeron-Parenteau
Perron-Vermette-Briere
Lapierre-Mitchell-Talbot

Letang-Vlasic
Barberio-Deslauriers
St.Denis-Savard

Fleury
Loungo
Bernier

ANALYSIS: Goaltending is solid, no holes there. Defense is weak and offense is weak on right wing.
This team is comparable to teams like Czech Republic, Finland, etc.

They can easily make it out of group stage and fight for a semi-final spot but probably would lose to teams like Canada, Russia or full strength Sweden.

Brassard is in the playoffs, and Letang and Vlasic are injured. They could still have a minor shot is they gelled well, but the talent isn't there to be a favourite over any of the traditionally strong or even decent) nations. Best case scenario would be playing like Finland, most likely they are on the same level as Belarus.

Vibes of Finland, solid goaltending and some bright spots among the skaters. Bronze medal with some effort

If every player would be available:

Tanguay-Brassard-Perron
Huberdeau-Bergeron-Burrows
St. Louis-Ribeiro-Bernier
Talbot-Vermette-Chiasson
(Derharnais,Perreault)

Vlasic-Letang
Beauchemin-Savard
Scandella-Demers
(Despres)

Luongo
Crawford
(Fleury)

Thats a lineup based on their handedness

It's got nothing on Team Manitoba! :sarcasm:

Darren Helm - Travis Zajac - Mark Stone
Nigel Dawes - Cody Eakin - Dale Weise
Micheal Ferland - Matt Calvert - Jordin Tootoo
Ryan Garbutt - Cody McLeod - Ryan Reaves

Travis Hamonic - Michael Stone
Derek Meech - Damon Severson
Bryce Salvador - Colby Robak

James Reimer
Calvin Pickard

I omitted Alex Steen as he plays for Sweden. The absence of Toews, Sharp and Keith really hurts.

The depth of Canadian hockey is such that any province west of the Maritimes could put together a team that would be competitive at the WHC. The question would just be depth at any position. Quebec has long been dominant in net but weak on Def, Ontario would be absolutely dominant up front (Tavares, Hall, Seguin, Giroux, Spezza, Duchene, O'Reilly, etc.) and on Right D (Subban, Doughty, Pietrangelo) but suspect in net, and Alberta and BC would both be solid on the back end (Phaneuf, Bouwmeester for AB, Weber, Seabrook for BC) and in net (Price for BC, Ward for Alberta) with a lot of unspectacular grinders up front.

If you were to construct a lineup for any province right now, and one for the Maritimes (Crosby, MacKinnon), I think you'd easily fit any into the Top 10 at the WHC this year. Even the USA has 4 or 5 NCAA players and their Team Captain (Matt Hendricks) is a 4th liner for the Oilers.

Thought Tootoo was from Nunavut?

Thought Tootoo was from Nunavut?

I know that he has family in Nunavut, and that's where he might have spent a part of his childhood, but he was born in Churchill MB.

Edit: Wikipedia tells me he grew up in Nunavut, so he probably doesn't consider himself Manitoban. If you have to, I suppose you can replace him with Carter Ashton.

Could someone make a Quebec team excluding injured players and players in the playoffs?

Brassard is in the playoffs, and Letang and Vlasic are injured.

Vermette would be gone too.

Huberdeau-Bergeron-Dupuis
Tanguay-Ribero-Parenteau
Perron-Lecavalier-Briere
Burrows-Mitchell-Pominville
Lapierre

Robidas-Demers
Depres-Savard
Barberio-Deslauriers
St.Denis

Luongo
Bernier
Poulin/Domingue

and if Bernier declines, net is very suspect.

You can do it for Sweden as well, Norrland, Svealand, Götaland and Skåne landscapes. I did it some years ago here at hf and they all could matter.

With that said. It is a bit more interesting with Quebec than other parts of Canada.

^^Yaya the Maritime suck lol I know.

Atlantic Canada could ice a team capable of an upset. I just threw together a few players (some old and injured) not sure of some of the lessor known younger guys. Not bad for 2.3 Million

Ryder Crosby Mackinnon
Killorn Marchand Clowe
Purcell Couturier Ott
Cleary Richards Bolton

Gormley MacDonald
McQuaid Pardy
XXX XXX

Allen

But every player isnt available. If you can do that for Quebec, you can do that for any other country. if that was the case, Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, and Finland all likely beat them.

For Team Atlantic :
Marchand Crosby MacKinnon
Clowe Killorn Ryder
Couturier Richards Purcell
Malone Ott Cleary
Boulton Sheppard Greening

Pardy McQuaid
Gormley Johnson
Jones MacDonald
Flood Grant

Allen
Pickard
MacDonald

Good forward depth, weak defense, 1 goaltender

If I was to pick one Province / State / Region that would. Have the dominant team, it would be Ontario. In fact, I'd argue that an Ontario team would be good enough to win the Olympics, let alone the WHC.

To start (I may have missed a star player or two)

Hall - Tavares - Stamkos
Duchene - Giroux - Seguin
R. Nash - Nugent-Hopkins - Simmonds
O'Reilly - E. Staal - J. Carter
McDavid

Subban - Doughty
M. Staal - Pietrangelo -
Burns - Ekblad
D. Hamilton

Steve Mason
Mike Smith

That team would be capable of winning the Olympics.

I imagine the hospital he was born in was located in Churchill.

I sort of want to see these teams play.

Even Atlantic Canada. You ice a first line of Marchand/Crosby/MacKinnon, anything could happen.

Yeah i think hockey wise it is a tragedy that that referendum on Quebec independance fell just short. I think you should propose to play with provincial teams internationally, it would probably give as many wins nationally as you get now becouse of Ontario and a few more. More medals for sure and a much larger field in hockey. I can fully understand though that this idea might not feel very Kocher to you lol.
