He was the face of the franchise during the 90s/00s. Considering how popular hockey was in Toronto like 20-25 years ago, how popular was Mats Sundin to the Toronto Sports Media? Not just hockey but just the sport as a whole. Those days he won a lot of playoff series with the team. I mean sure the Leafs have Matthews but his popularity in Toronto sports media isn't as high as the Raptors stars.

As a whole, what was the sports media like in Toronto during the mid-90s to mid-00s?

Like.

1/3rd a Drake.

Loveable Swedish man. Will always love him.

Good Captain, surrounded by a better team we could have done something.

The vancouver thing hurt him, but after time you realize he was chasing and forgive, but if he let us trade him, we would be ahead of where we are at now.

He was one of the greatest Leafs ever post Smythe era. I'll never forget his 500th goal and Hat trick goal blasting it past Kiprusoff in OT, or his playoff OT goal vs Ottawa off the post and in

Its sad we never gave him a great team despite being able to spend unlimited amounts of money. Drafting was poor, trades were poor and we had some bad luck along the way (Berard)

He was huge at the time, the Raptors stank, but with Vince Carter on the rise. And the Jays had Delgado and Halladay but never made the playoffs.

Not as popular as he should have been.

His nationality and who he was traded for always held him back from what should have been a much higher status. However, towards the end, he gained more traction. And I think now that the Leafs haven’t won a playoff series since he was captain, that we are experiencing the “don’t know what you have until it’s gone” sentiment, especially since many didn’t like him as captain and wished he was traded (for Lindros, Blake) during his tenure, as well as in his final seasons.

He was no Joe Lundrigan.

Damn you know Dubas failed hard this off season when these are the topics being posted.
Lmao you clowns just cannot ever help yourselves can you?
It would be just as easy to say the opposite considering negativity is way more conducive to conversation than positivity. just look at a PGT around here after a loss vs after a win

He was pretty loved for the most part and for many of the millenial Leaf fans he's the most iconic and memorable Leaf easily. We grew up watching Mats put the team on his back over and over again.

He was also a natural leader and was one of the most respected players around the league. Even though people hate the Leafs they always had respect for Sundin.

And to be honest, if Sundin has a better supporting cast around him he probably gets mentioned in the same tier as guys like Sakic and Yzerman.

I'm still disappointed that he was villainized by some for refusing to be traded to Montreal and the return was Mikhail Grabovski, Chris Higgins and 1st.

At the time I would have rather have lost him for nothing then trade him to Montreal. I'm sure their fans feel the same with their all time greats. Granted they have a much better class of greats then we do lol.

Imagine Bruins fans turning on Patrice Bergeron for declining a trade to the Leafs for a few spare parts, and demonizing him for leading the "Cape Cod Crew" of teammates who also want to stay in Boston to finish their careers.

Just seems egregiously wrong to punish that kind of loyalty. Compare and contrast all the hand wringing from the fanbase that Auston Matthews will leave for Arizona the moment he can...

Popular, but not universally beloved. Only Toronto athlete more popular during that time coincided with him were Gilmour and Vince Carter at his peak (which had an ugly divorce). Maybe Roy Halladay and Cujo before fleeing to Detroit. He got knocked for being huge and European but not being a power guy by fans who are mostly in their late 70's and 80's now (not that it was universal among that group). Tons of people would claim their favorite Leafs at points during his run were gritty Canadian boys like Tucker and Domi. Got knocked unfairly for not being a physical force like Lindros despite being the same size, being soft spoken and our failure to ever build a great team around him leading to him carrying around many garbage 1st line wingers outside of Mogilny and Roberts, and never having a true top 10 D in the league during his run here.

love reading the takes from people who allow bias to taint what happens/happened
mats was a true leaf ... right to the bone... if everybody in today's lineup cared like mats we'd be home free

some mats facts

1) he exercised his ntc that he had in his contract
2) he DID NOT turn his back on the leafs to run to vancouver .. this is the most often spouted untruth about mats out there
3) he wanted to remain a leaf
4) the reason he left was burke... burke wanted him to sign a 2 year contract, mats said he wanted to take it one year at a time, burke then said we are going to go in a different direction
5) after the fact burke backpedalled and tried to make it like mats didnt want to be a leaf ... all quite a bit after the fact

Burke closed door on Sundin return - The Globe and Mail
