The team isn't gonna risk missing the playoffs with no draft picks for 3 years, I'll be shocked if they let him walk.

I am just sick and tired of this team bending over backwards for these guys. What will JT at 2c get us? A shit sandwich, that's what. Just miss the playoffs if you're gonna get you ass whooped at home by Florida in game 5 and 7.

I hear you, the team is just in a bad situation right now. They don't really have any assets to trade to get better (I think we keep Cowan and Danford), the UFA class will suck once the best players resign, and we don't have any picks for 3 years so failure isnt an option.

Yea, I know and it really sucks. Hopefully they can figure it out somehow.

I hope so too, management put itself into a corner trading 1sts like candy for rentals and depth players, theres almost nothing left in the well.

They got their work cut out for themselves, I would have never expected us to be in this position with how much cap space we will have in what seems like forever.

Draw an absolute line in the sand. 3x5 mil is the highest we can go.

What did he do for the Leafs his prime 1st 2 years in the postseason? When he should have been competing with Matthews for the best player on the ice.

13 games played 8 points - 4 goals. -8 +/- btw. Next season he got knocked out in MTL. -8 ????????? 50 point pace.

I think he's a terrible player. He's been stat padding off the PP1 and Nylander for years.

People need to get the idea of 'we are losing a C' out of their heads

He is a winger who is great on the dot who has been playing C due to a lack of options

He came here for family reasons and has made over 100m in his career

If he was serious about winning a cup here, he would have put pen to paper on a team freindly deal already, allowing management to focus on other moves to improve the team

This ^^^ right here.

The team has already paid $11 million per season and Tavares not willing to even provide some form of concession to actually help not only the team, but him win the Stanley Cup is a big red flag.

In fact, Tavares should have some self respect and dignity for himself when a team rips off the C (captaincy) from you, he should be willing to move on to another team.

Time to move on and let him get paid elsewhere, the Leafs are never going to win with him on the roster.

Just like all the other guys did. Oh wait

Signing Tavares would only be running it back regardless of Marner leaving. The team needs a shake up. The formula didn't work.
Tavares and Reilly should go.
We’ve had JT for 7 years, he’s Weekend at Bernie’s on skates. I don’t know if he’s alive or dead, no pulse. Reilly has just been here failing longer, ask him to waive.
For now, Matthews and Nylander are the only 2 that survive the purge.

They too are part of Club Failure.

They are, but someone in their infinite wisdom gave everyone NMC. If you can get Rielly to waive, start there. Perhaps you will get the others to waive as we go along. Baby steps because it took us 10 years to get there. Not going to fixed in 1 season.

If the plan was to do that drastic of an overhaul I think they probably would have kept next years first round pick.

What is a Team friendly deal?
Who else needs to sign on the team for the equivalent of the difference in pay from team friendly deal to his market value?

so basically what i am asking is how much $ do you want to save and who do you want new on the team that will sign for the same amount that JT lost by signing with the leafs

Think about it this way. JT played like an 7-8 million dollar player for 7 years. So he wants 7 now you tell him you already got an extra 3 for 7 years now you want 7 so you can take the extra 3 you got for 7 years and take 4 now.

Is there actually a reason to sign JT? I mean he is pretty old and not quick. Why are we considering this?

They need centers badly - even if he does extend, there center position is still woeful, and there just aren't many good Cs out there right now;: free agents or trade targets.

But there's limits to this too - it blows my mind that they might have to do a "Tanev" style deal in order to convince this guy to stay and keep the AAV down.

I think the Leafs absolutely have to grind this negotiation right down into a deal where it's a clear and emphatic "left money on the table" deal. For me, that's something like 3 x $4.5m.

At the end of the day he's still a 37 year old, who can't drive his own line, who needs elite players/speed on his wings, and needs to be sheltered against top opposition.

That's not the sort of guy you go long on, and that's not the sort of guy you simply cave into demands on.

Since the last Florida series(4 total series) Tavares is on 36 point pace. How awful that is considering how many points are PP?

What are his 5 on 5 point total the last 4 series? like 10 point pace or something?

The only team Tavares did alright against was Tampa, and that's because they're way more of a slow tactical team.
