15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 32 games.

That cliff some folks keep chirping about… doesn’t seem to be panning out.

He’s literally been at the same consistent pace since he entered the NHL in 2009.
Hes been far better than could have expected after a poor second half and back to back bad playoff series. Playing like a low end 1C or elite 2C so far this year. Of course he isnt worth 11M but he is likely worth 8M this season which is still great value for Y7 of his deal for regular season alone play.

If he performs well in the playoffs we should consider an extension. If he doesnt then should move on and be active on trade market for a younger and faster 2C

Team not extending him and Marner yet shows management is committed to not making rash decisions and locking in guys who havent worked in the past.

No reason to extend Tavares before July, 1st 2025 He wants to be a leaf only so let things work out after the playoffs

Were they rash decisions when they signed the other two early?

What makes you think things have changed?
Marner and Tavares both playing well and in the past I'd expect them to have been extended or heavy contract talks going on

Dont see too many rumors yet of us looking to sign them before playoffs

Shanahan I think also only has 1 year left. MLSE may be looking to see how the shanaplan in its 10th year goes. If things go as they have in the past they likely are more open to a core shakeup + shanahan not being retained.

MLSE seems to want to see if this team can secure the division, have a good playoffs before rewarding 91 and 16 with big deals.

I think the lack of news is the new norm with Treliving in charge. Nothing was leaked before Nylander was signed either.
Guess we’ll see but I expect Marner for sure to be signed before the seasons out. Tavares is different because the Leafs have all the leverage.

The Lightning didn’t let Stamkos walk for no reason. And the reason certainly wasn’t “brave” or “admirable”. They let him go because part of the job of being a GM is setting a reputation and BriseBois wanted to set an example for the everyone else that he won’t overpay for anyone, even if that someone is a franchise legacy player.
No, they let him go because he was old, not very good, and they had an immediate alternative that was better. The only one of those that applies to Tavares is old.
Similar to Dubas. He held a firm line negotiating with Nylander and went to the absolute last possible second only to get literally nothing and sign Nylander to exactly what the original offer was.
That's not what happened. Nylander caved.
Even the ones who are “great” at negotiating contracts, like Lou Lamoriello

I’m genuinely surprised how well he’s doing this year even though I thought a more direct style of play would help him.

That being said, please please please don’t resign him to too much money and term again. He was already overpaid for 7 years and he’s had a habit of trailing off the last while.
