Pretty possible Buchelnikov will come to the team this summer, and he will need a veteran Russian player to help him to get comfortable with NA life and hockey. So what point to get rid of Tarasenko?
Wings have 10 returning forwards. Not including Kane, who Yzerman said he would like to bring back.

Detroit can’t run it back with 10 or 11 of the same forwards from last year. There needs to be more churn then that.

Tough to move certain guys like Compher/Copp because of term length remaining. Some guys they simply wouldn’t want to move. Tarasenko seems logical as it had not been a good fit so far.

This is another guy I wonder if Treliving takes a look at because he's won with Berube.

I also wonder if he's a buyout candidate

He has a NTC with 24 Teams in the league. Cap is not an issue, Pretty sure SJS or CHI or any other rebuilding team would use Full cap to reach the floor and try to get a pick at TDL. Now Yzerman has traded Walman and given a second, pretty sure some teams will try to take advantage of this precedent.

I'd think with retention he could be a good bounce back candidate.

Alternatively they can buy him out for a very low cost and I still think he could be a good bounce back candidate for a team looking for an option at 2RW.

Retention would be used as the sweetener in this scenario.

I’m sure Yzerman will be gun shy to throw picks away in order to dump cap after the Walman episode.
I'm certain Yzerman doesn't give a rats ass what any of us think and will do whatever he feels like. All the hoopla about the Walman thing and there's no evidence to support Yzerman caring what anyone else thinks of it.

I don’t get it. Why are the Wings retaining? What are they going to do with that space that they can’t do now?

The post seems to read that the Wings should pay Tank to play somewhere else because.

Ah be active in free agency and trade market

If they were gonna move Tank with retention, I'd assume it's about a roster spot, not the cap space.

The retention would be a matter of value. (Whether it gets them a better return or keeps them from paying to open the spot)

just because a player played for ___ team or ___ coach doesn't mean a reunion always makes sense. at this point in his career, tarasenko would not endear himself at all to Berube's style of play.

also LOL at everyone calling him by the nickname he is on record as disliking and finding disrespectful ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh lets be clear here I don't actually want it, and certainly not at 4+ million.

But they did win together so I wonder.

That doesn’t answer the question.
They are retaining because it’s unlikely they get something for tank at full cost and they would probably have to add a sweetener, and even they could be unlikely because he has a NTC.

The cap space will be used to acquire more talent for the roster in FA and trades

It's pretty apparent that Walman was ushered out due to some sort of off-ice issue.

I'd say some teams would be interested at $3.5m. Put up decent points with both Ottawa and Florida last year and he'd only need to be a 20+20 player to be a decent deal at $3.5.

Somehow he'll go to Vegas.
