How much of the PP is the coaching and how much is it the players?

So, again, why should the team be playing a style that doesn't fit the personnel?

I'll take the obvious increase in good scoring chances (even if they aren't being finished right now) even if that means that the team is "playing a style that doesn't fit the personnel."

We might not be producing as well 5 on 5 as we did with Torts but there is no debate that we're creative offensively and give teams a harder time in their own zone. One would think that that would make no sense given the lack of production that you're talking about and I don't either as I'm just taking your word for it (I'm not going to bother to look up the advanced stats or whatever).

It's a few things.

Last year every ****ing shot we took was blocked. With Richards and McD at the points, firing away with confidence, more shots are getting through. Obviously that means more goals.

A full season of Brassard and Zuccarello has improved this PP LARGELY. They're both wizards with the puck and can make passes to anyone in the zone, anywhere.

It seems more natural. The players look like they've played in the NHL on the powerplay. It's not the terrible adventure that it used to be with them. Credit that to practicing of the powerplay.

Players making more creative passes/utilizing their creativity. This team is almost guaranteed to score on 5 on 3's now. They're confidently making high reward passes and they're benefiting from it.

Sucks because our ES goals are so down, but I'm enjoying our deadly powerplay.

I have to go with a combination of the two. Under Renney's 4 yrs we were ranked 8,8,22,29. Under Torts we were ranked 13,18,23,23. Needless to say that player personnel changes occurred that changed the dynamics of the special team and their results. Renney going from 8th to 22,29 and Torts going from 13 to 23. However you cannot rule out the system that each coach brought into play and their failure to modify their systems with the player personnel in place as changes occurred. Like with AV going from a same personnel showing of 23rd under Torts system to the current 7th place showing under AV's system.

One of the big changes is the Rangers are having a much easier time of entering the zone and setting up than they did under Torts.

I really don't think you can identify a single thing. Some of it is coaching. Some of it is personnel. Some of it is confidence.

Some of it is unexplained. The difference between last year and this year is that there's always a ton of movement on the PP. Do you really think the coaches were preaching for the players to just stand around last year? Do you really think the coaches were preaching for the players to dump it in without the right support? Do you really think that players like Nash were suffering from a lack of confidence? Something was broken in the way the Rangers would approach the powerplay during games. It isn't always explainable why.

None of those things are factors this year and therefore the powerplay is effective.

Coaching is obviously important. The simple fact is we have gone from a defensive coaching team which didn't understand the basics of the man advantage, to an offensive coaching team which has consistently put emphasis on the man advantage, and not surprisingly our powerplay has improved dramatically.

Players are important too, but a large part of that is down to coaches knowing where to put players. For example, we had a pretty good point distributor last year, but he was nailed to the bench on the powerplay in favour of Dan f**king Girardi.

The dramatic upturn in results makes a lot of sense. Because we have brought in a very offence biased coach, and his team is being compared to one of the worst coached units in history.
