How much do you tip cab drivers?

I took a cab home from a bar the other day with my buddy and the fare was $23 something, and I just gave homeboy $30 and said "all good."

My buddy was all like "Dude, why would you do that, that's huge?!"

My line of thinking, like I told my friend was just: "If I give $25, I am cheap af. If I ask for two bucks or something back, I am also cheap af. Do I really need two bucks? Homeboy has to deal with drunk idiots and **** all the time, why not be a little extra nice to someone once in a while?"

thoughts?

15% is the American standard tip on anything. By that standard, you would have tipped $3.45 on a $23 ride.

That being said, IMO there is also a roughly $4-5 bare minimum for any service. For example, if I order $15 worth of pizza delivery, a $2.25 tip is garbage. The delivery guy still had to do basically the same amount of work for my $15 order as he would have for a $150 order, not to mention that a few bucks is a decent sized chunk of that guy's take-home for the night. So for me, a $15 service means a $20 actual payment unless the guy is a dick or something.

I really only catch cabs when I'm drinking or am going to be.

How much I tip usually depends on how professional the cab driver is and also how much I've had to drink.

Yeah it's worth a few extra bucks for some nominal service, but what about the flip side when you spend $400 at a restaurant, you're there maybe a couple of hours and the waitress is doing a bunch of tables. I always find it hard to fathom justifying what could be a $60 tip for someone who's also waiting a bunch of other tables at the same time.

Haven't taken a taxi / cab in a few years now.

Only do Uber / Lyft.

Uber Pool and Lyft Line rock.

4$ from one end of SF to the other.

You're right, and yes I do use that logic as well. It makes me feel like a bit of a dick, but I'm not tipping $30 on a $200 meal if it was just two plates at $100 each.

Especially true if it's just drinks. I've been a bartender and there isn't $15 worth of effort in making $100 worth of drinks.

If i ride the cab alone, I'll do it by a multiple of 5. If the cab is 21 I'll give a 4 dollar tip.

if the driver appears to be social and keeps the conversation going, I'll give them 20%. Not saying that they need to be talking for the entire trip, but the typical "where ya heading?, you from here? what do you do?" tends to get the conversation going and quite often makes the drive seem quicker than what it is.

Had a driver in Cincy last month who was just miserable for the entire drive. Complained about his last job, complained about being an Uber driver, complained about passengers, his wife, and the dog that just threw up as he was leaving the house. Doing a tuck and roll out of the car at 35 would have been less painful than listening to this guy for another 5 miles. Aside from that driver, I've never had anybody quite on that negative level. That dude got a buck and whatever change I had in my pocket.

Honestly, if its cash it is always rounded to the next $5. Never really been in the situation where the cab costed $24 so I doubt drunk me would only tip $1. At the same time I use Uber most of the time now and I actually didn't even tip Uber drives until like the last time I did. Drunk me also assumed that it wasn't the norm but I had a debate with a friend about it so I did after.

Whenever I use debit/credit it is always 20%. It gets pricey and I think only 1 time I have gone back and was like yeah no and changed it to 15%.

At the bar it always is whatever change I get back since drinks for the most part are already priced out to tip if paying cash. (ex. most common drinks are $4.25-$4.75)

I live in NYC, the cabvision gives options 15%/20%/25% or other. I generally tip at 20%. However, if they take the long way, I have no problem giving them 10% or even 5%. The cabbies know what they are doing. They know what streets are gridlocked during rush hour. They could take a side street in 50s and get me to Penn. However, some resort go into to the 30s so they can take as much as they want.

I also will write down the cab numbers and send them to NYC for processing. I will also sometimes take a cab to my car at JFK. You have no idea how much that enrages them. They waited in a pool to get $10. Ehh, tell your brethren to stop ripping me off in the city.

some people they just stop exactly at x$.
