How much do scalpers ask for after the first period?

I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat here, but I'm going to be staying with a friend of mine about ten minutes from the ACC next week. Our plan is to watch the first period at his place or at a bar downtown, and if it's a close game try to get desperate scalpers out front.

I know price isn't easy to pinpoint with the high increase, but is there generally a percentage that a scalper will take off if it's halfway through a game?

Thanks and Go Leafs Go. Can't wait to be in the thick of things come playoff time.

I would not expect any scalpers to be left with their tickets after a 9 year drought, unless they have rediculous pricingand would not drop it for you.

Eesh. Some scalpers might even hike up the prices if the Leafs are leading after the first. I know I would.... because I'm a huge ******* like that.

i'd be shocked if you found a scalper after the first. They know what they're doing, and they make sure the tickets are sold a few minutes before the game.

Internet re-sale (read: internet scalping) has drastically diminished the amount of tickets scalpers have to begin with. The days of scalpers walking around with bundles of tickets are long gone. They still have them, but not at the quantities they once had. With that said, you can rest assured every ticket will be gone come puck drop. It has been nearly a decade. There probably is not even room for negotiation with scalpers. If you balk at their price, the next guy wont.

Scalpers are stupid, my buddy and I tried getting in at the start of the 3rd period last year, he still wanted $150 for **** seats, I said well either you sell them to me or you call it a loss. He never sold them to anyone

Many scalpers would rather trash their tickets than give last second discounts. They don't want to set precedent and constantly have a lineup of buyers waiting till the last minute to buy.

Also, many of the scalpers are selling for season ticket holders, the majority of which are company or corporate paid tickets. So, the company pays for the ticket and the company owner/ticket holder has the scalper sell the tickets for cash.

Instead of listening to all these naysayers, why not give it a go and let us know what happens.

You could head over at the first intermission, and if you get shut out watch the 2nd on the big screen in Maple Leaf Square. Then walk back to your buddy's place during the 2nd intermission.

I say go for it - you've got nothing to lose, and you might get lucky and have a great time!

That would be money laundering and tax evasion.

I believe in a free market but a free market is supposed to be free of corruption and barriers to equality. IIRC scalping is illegal anyway.

I have a solution.

For individual purchasers, I think each ticket should have to have a name attached to it and that person must be the one who attends the game. If you cannot use your ticket, you should be able to refund it back to MLSE up to the start of the game who then can re-sell your ticket at face value to the 500 or so fans waiting outside the arena. One single person would be able to "register" up to four tickets with their own name, and that person could then bring their friends, family, co-workers, clients etc. Of course, special consideration should be made for large families, community groups, corporate groups etc.

Season ticket holders would be able to designate who's name goes on each ticket up to 1 week prior to the game or perhaps could have an "authorized" list of clients. If they do not register a name on their tickets, they receive a refund and the tickets are then available at the box office.

Thoughts?

Me and my buddy bargained a scalper all the way down to 10 bucks a ticket LMAO

That's just bull ****, there's no way that ever happened. These guys are part of the mafia
also they don't sell tickets cheaper after the game starts, they sell them for even more because a bunch of drunk people will come and are willing to pay a lot for them

these guys probably don't even have full-time jobs, this is their job

lol. Dude, get real! The rich get richer... that's the way the system works.

So your telling me I already missed a goal? And I should pay more?

You miss a 1/3 of the game, I want a 33% discount, take it or leave it.

Besides you don't even know if Im a Leaf fan or the other teams fan.

Its so easy to negotiate when you have the money, and the other guy wants it.

I agree with what someone said earlier in the thread:

Buy ticket from Leafs website (STH or not), and you print name of attending person. If you want to resale it to a specific person, you do it on the website at face value and the new person has those tickets with their name on it. Bring photo ID to game.

But no one has time for all this and it likely won't happen.

I have a friend who's a scalper, and yeah, it is his full time job. He's been doing it for 2 years. Spends $50,000 a year on tickets, and sells em for more. He's even got a website now.

It's pathetic.

Back in 2005-2007 I used to live right by the ACC and so I went to a ton of games, and always bought off of scalpers. This is my opinion:

- The trick of going late only works if the Leafs are playing against the Florida Panthers or some other team that (a) isn't relevant (b) doesn't have any super stars.
Even if it's the middle of the season in an 82 game schedule and they're playing against the Lightning (Stamkos, St Louis) or Hurricanes (Staal brothers, Ward) on a Tuesday night, you won't get any deep discounts. The only way to do it is if u go to a scalper before the game with a Leafs gear on and you ask them how much, they shoot you a price, you tell them you can't afford it in a dissppointed voice. He'll ask you what your budget is, tell him $100 or whatever, he'll probably say for double or triple that he can get you a standing room only ticket, you tell him you don't have the money. He'll be busy, get out of his way... from there when you see things dying down and he's got no more customers, let him know you're a die hard fan with $100 on you, you don't care where the seat is or if it even is a seat, as long as it gets you in the door. From there, they may throw you a bone and sell you a ticket at $100 IF they have one.

- During a regular season Saturday night game against Montreal Canadiens, ticket prices are usually 25-30% more expensive then a regular game and they sell out before the puck drops. If you want seats together, you have to be ready to pay through the nose. Single seats usually go last and if you're willing to watch the game at the bar you can negotiate a little bit. The scalpers don't want to go home with their tickets, but they won't sell them for much lower then they're asking for.. so you tell them your budget is $25 or $30 below what they're asking and tell tell them you're willing to take whatever single ticket they have. But waiting till after the puck drops on a Saturday night game, there's no chance any scalpers would still have their tickets on them. So you can imagine what Montreal vs Toronto playoff game in Toronto would be like, even if you're willing to pay top dollar, I'd say you better go early.

- One other thing is if you're going to try and negotiate, don't try and say "that guy over there will sell to me for less" most of the scalpers all work together. Especially the guys who are dressed warm and asking people as they walk by. If they don't work together, they're at least friends. Don't make the assumption that they're competitors who don't know each other's prices.

Good luck!
