How Much Better is This Team With Berube/New Personnel?

Can you show how they are FAR better defensively?

On paper they are, not sure if it is the systems or what, but they don't appear to be better (could be wrong).
Their defense as a whole is a far better in terms of the quality of the players. With Carlo in and Tanev back, the Leafs' defense stacks up against any team in the league other than maybe Vegas.

I wouldnt say it stacks up to anyone but Vegas. I would say top 15 though. Morgan literally negates having a top 4D. He makes his partner a non top 4D

He seemed to start well, they played what I would call Berube hockey. Then is stopped and they were still winning playing rather loose. I think Matthews had an injury around then and after that it's sort of just this, whatever we are witnessing now.. looks like they reverted to what they have done under Keefe for 5 years or so.

So the longer they had to implement Berube's system the worse they got?

St Louis got worse the longer Berube was there too.

Matthews has been injured all year though.

The difference between now and the beginning of the year is goaltending.

False.

But regardless, the claim was they are far better defensively, I am just asking for numbers to back this up.

On paper, this is one of our better D years (still don't think it is our best), but results don't seem to show that they are doing amazing defensively.

Well....the biggest difference is goaltending .....that not even in question.

Tanev makes a difference but the rest? Not so much IMHO

Our underlying numbers seem to not support we are that much better defensively compared to Keefers teams who had shady goaltending.

Team still struggles to score and every game no matter the quality of competition always seems like a close game. There is no domination here even though we have 3 of the top 20 players in the league? or close too it.

Berube isnt a savior and Tre isnt a GM that is so much better then what Dubas provided IMHO

Its still early and I was all good for change but IMHO this system isnt the best system to put our elite players in position to succeed.

BTW....anyone miss Reaves? Just a terrible signing.

You still have issues in the back end creating offense. If the plan is too just keep on bouncing the pucks off the boards and losing puck possession then I'm afraid it will be a tough road to success in the playoffs.

But we have wait and see and give both Berube and Tre a few years to see if their views will lead to success.

Blame Shanny
Blame Dubas
Blame Marner
Blame Nylander
Blame Mathews
Blame Taveres

Everyone else gets a pass correct?

Oh btw.....do you really think Mathews....Marner and Nylander like this dump and chase system ?
We have had our goalies this year win games for us. That rarely happened when Keefer was the coach.
Imagined if Sammy was still here as our primary goalie? We would IMHO be struggling to make the playoffs.

I'm not sure where your goaltending number is coming from. Stolarz is .921 and Woll is .905.
Looks like he's including empty net goals, which I guess is OK if he includes them both seasons - comparing like to like.

Goalies in: 1685/1857 = .909
Including EN: 1685/1875 = .899

imo things do feel grim or at least very worrying but I swear some people only appear on here during such periods
After Thursday's game, and then especially after Saturday's game, the mood here will switch again and people will be talking about which wild card team the leafs will be playing in the first round.

How did Berube and the Blues play to have success in the playoffs? That ain't happening here.

The Blues were already built to win for years and years. Berube matched with them well and they got it done, but fell off after.

Here Berube is expected to make soft core into hard core. Take poor depth and make them contender level depth. It's not really possible and out only hope is we get the best out of this group and Stolarz goes on an elite run

saying goaltending is the only difference is Wrong.

Keefe had Andersen who was the best goalie leafs had... The biggest difference is leafs are better to clean the front of the net to let his goalie see the puck and been able to control rebound.

2- Leafs are now more build for playoff hockey. You will rarely dominate your opponent in playoff... You need to find a way to win close game, you need to find a way to keep your lead. Leafs is one of best team one goal game and despite last collapse of keeping lead, they still the best team or in the best team to keep lead (less blowout lead in NHL)

We’ve had 4 goalies play for us this year you guys forget ?

It seems Berube can't enforce accountability. The core runs the show and all the moves he makes leaves the core alone pretty much. The Morgan coverup is the biggest tell. Though shalt not speak I'll of Morgan.
As I said early on, he will embrace the Clubhouse in time. They listened to him early as he was gruff and demanded more. His instincts as a former player and coach were correct, He eventually became absorbed, knowing what he was seeing wasn't quite right, but the team was winning so...

Now he understands fully. He has to own it and more importantly make the team own it for one another.
