How many years left for Ovechkin?

He's on pace for just 19 goals this year. He does not look good this year. But I'm hoping he plays for at least 3 more seasons after this one. If he can score 18 goals in each of those 3 seasons, he will beat Gretzky for all time goals leader.

How many years do you think he plays after this one? Is he still motivated to take #99's record?

Obviously sooner he can do it the better, then he can retire and live out his years back in Russia.

I think it depends but most of all it depends on what Ovechkin wants to do the capitals are clearly all in and this happens with most teams with a player the stature of Ovechkin, the teams let's the player decide.

My guess is that he calls it quits either this off season or sometime next season.

I still think he’s vastly out of shape, I hope this season will be a hit on his self esteem and he will take the next mid season seriously and actually come in in a good shape, plus hopefully the Caps find some playmaking help for him

I think he finishes out his contract then maybe plays a year in Russia or something.

Also I see people saying he'll retire and there is no way, Ovechkin lost alot of money due to lockouts and COVID there no way he leaving 9 million on the table

I agree with your assessment, he will probably replace Fetisov in Putin’s government
he is also clearly playing injured

He has 9 goals in 47 games (missed 3) so that’s a 15-16 goal pace. Probably gets around 20 though.

I think we see 2 more years. I can’t see Ovechkin leaving Washington as a hired gun. Washington club has out performed my expectations overall this season while Ovechkin produced less than expected. I figure as the teams performance declines moving forward Ovechkins desire might with it. He’s a competitive guy. Can’t see him pulling a Marleau and over-staying his welcome just to record chase either.

He said he has no interest in chasing the record as a 4th liner.

IMO he could be a good complimentary scorer with a higher-end center. He's still 2nd in points on a team where he's one of the main players defenses focus on.

The fact that he has missed games
In another thread it was claimed that he has had an injury since last March, thought you were referring to that as the last injury he came back from and it's not like he was playing well before the injury.

He’s under contract for 2 more years. I don’t see him hanging it up before April 2026. If something happens and he hits LTIR, then sure, but I doubt he willingly retires before this contract is over.

I think he still has 2 more years after this. I think he will come back heavily motivated and have a bit of a bounce back year next season. He's definitely declined, but I think his fall off is being exacerbated by losing Backstrom and Kuznetzov's decline. I think they'll make a move for another center at some point which could hopefully rejuvenate him.

He ain't leaving until he breaks the record so it depends on how long you think it will take him, I say he has 3 seasons after this

At age 37 he had 42 goals and was above a PPG.

Your persistent history revisions against Ovechkin are blatant.

One thing that's maybe worth considering with regards to Ovi's decision on when to hang it up are his overall totals. I reckon falling under a career ppg and on a lesser note under +-0 might be of concern to him, not sure. He's currently 125 points over 1.00 ppg and +50 but the point cushion will likely diminish further this season. Might be wild but there's a plausible chance he's like at 100 over ppg at season's end and has two more seasons in his contract, maybe he can't manage even 32 points in 82 games twice?
It's also entirely possible he doesn't give a crap about these stats as they have very little bearing on his total body of work.

If the Caps could attract a real PP QB who could run the play like Backstrom did, he could probably start producing some goals again. Without anyone like that I can't see him beating the record.
