How many rookies will be on the opening night roster next year? Which ones?

Copp and Tarasenko are not the same as Holl. Holl has been truly awful, played limited minutes and had to be protected. I know Copp is a favorite spacegoat but he is useful and will continue to be as we bring in young centers.

Tarasenko was a massive disappointment this season but I'd rather he get a chance to redeem himself with a bounceback year.

Holl though does deserve to be bought out/buried.

I don't scapegoat Copp. I just think we have too many guys like him already. If we actually needed more guys good for ten goals, we can go out and find a bottom-6 guy at a better price.

Tarasenko was absolutely a disappointment, but whether it's the players he was playing with or just age catching up to him is a serious question that must be answered. Yes, he's only 33, but different players have a different shelf life. It's easy to hope he has a resurgence type season next year, but can he?

I'd highly prefer to find a trading partner to move guys to (AT LEAST Holl, if we're hell bent on keeping Copp and Tarasenko), a team in a rebuild who can and will eat our bad contracts for a draft pick or a prospect that's years away. That's salary off the books we can use to buy a top free agents. If Tarasenko has a 20 goal season playing with Bedard or Celebrini, that's awesome and I'm happy for him. But having missed the big dance for nine straight seasons now, people are weary. My point is, it's time for a change in direction.

Copp does a lot more than provide 10 goals. He's the only reliable faceoff guy after Larkin. He can eat minutes in an unspectacular but defensively sound fashion. As we bring in young centers they can start at wing because of Copp and then ideally take over center and move him down the lineup.

Honestly the way he played this season I think Compher needs to prove he's the one who deserves to stay and not Copp.

What really screwed the Wings playoff hopes was a half season of Lalonde and the disappointing free agent signings in Gus and Tarasenko. I don't know that it's time for a change in direction as much as they can't have free agent failures like Gus, Tank and Holl anymore.

Hopefully now with Raymond, Dcat, Seider, Kasper and Ed in the lineup, free agents are starting to see a viable future for this team to be competitive and the Wings are a more attractive destination.

Hell, didn't Holl get benched here recently in favor of Lageeson?
I don't think it was benching if you talk about the Devils game, McLellan talked about it in the last practice presser, sounds more like every player should get a game in the end.

Should have a time stamp, if not around 8.30

For the topic I think you have to wait until July to name some players.

@Our Lady Peace curious to get your thoughts from watching these guys in GR.
I think Danielson and ASP have been developed well and are ready enough that they'll have useful roles on the roster to start. Danielson will be 3C + PK2, and ASP, to start least, will be 5/6D + PP2. Mazur should too, barring he is healthy

Lombardi I think will start in GR unless he has an otherworldly camp. MBN will start in GR most likely too. Management will want to maximize his offense on the smaller rink again, where he can be a go-to offensive situations guy and play next to the likes of Becher and Finnie, possibly Lombardi too

Tuomisto might be the 7D. I think he's more likely to stay in GR and be this year's injury callups a la Lagesson. I'm risk averse with Tuo, but he's worth at least seeing what he can bring. I wish they did that this year with him. Wallinder definitely to start in GR. Buium too

Cossa will likely start in GR as I don't think Steve moves Talbot or Mrazek yet

Agreed. The trade was weird at the time but apparently the goalie free agent market is underwhelming this summer so I get having Mrazek there. Talbot will be 38 years old and the Wings haven't exactly had great luck with goalie injuries. I understand not wanting to have to throw your promising goaltending prospect the starter early in the season because your other goalie is hurt.
He is the third goalie next year, but when he gets called up from Grand Rapids. It will be nice not to carry three goalies in my opinion.

Kasper didnt dominate the AHL, I dont think Danielson does either.

Nate has proven he plays a mature heavy two way game . Wings handcuff themselves by slow walking prospects the only way we get out of this rut we're in is trusting that our prospects can perform.

I got Mazur, Danielson, ASP and Cossa all making the team. With hopefully Lombardi MBN and Wallinder getting some games down the line.

Compher is low man on my totem pole, too. But I'm also not against him just centering the 4th line, either. If we run Ras-Compher-Tank out as the 4th line next year, I'm not going to complain about it as long as I like who is there in our top9.

Holl is really the only guy I would look to shove out the door for no reason more than to move on from him.

Danielson, Mazur

ASP 40% chance.
MBN 30% chance.

McLellan actually likes and plays talented kids (Johansson, Kasper, Soder)

Nate Danielson
MBN
ASP

Wallinder has a shot and either Mazur or Lombardi may knock MBN or another off the roster.

Centers - Larkin - Kasper - Danielson - Copp

I'm with you on Compher.and Gustafsson, I knew I was forgetting folks... and that's really the crux of the issue. We have too many mid to lackluster players, whether it's merely circumstance, having a down year, trying to cram a square peg into a round hole or what, but the guys either didn't fit the system, lost a step or more, or are just otherwise taking up roster spots that should be given to prospects and better free agents.

Upon reflection, I think my issue with Copp is more based on salary, not performance. He's making $5.625 million for two more seasons, and perhaps I expected more from him than just 10 goals (or 13, as he had last season) and being good at the dot.

So really, how many rookies we can play all depends on how much dead weight we can shed, how much cap space we end up with as a result of said shedding (if any), and how many free agents we can bring in. Maybe not Copp so much, but we have contracts we need to move (preferable, but NTCs/NMCs may hinder this), bury, or buy out. Compher makes $5.1m a year until 2027-2028, and I'm not sure how many teams would be willing to take that deal.

Totally agree about Holl. I hope the end of the year players meeting with him was essentially:

"I didn't sign you to be the #7 Dman. You're not getting paid to be the #7 Dman. So you better work your ass off this offseason to start playing better than a #7 Dman or I'm going to waive you by Thanksgiving and when you clear I'm gonna bury your ass in Grand Rapids for the rest of the season. So get used to riding the bus."

Probably Mazur and then Tuomisto or Wallinder (is he waiver exempt still?) as the 7th D. Danielson, Lombardi, the D who doesn't make are first call ups by say December. ASP probably isn't far behind, but I'm being a bit pessimistic/conservative here. Can easily see him playing his way onto the team in camp.

I think it looks something like this:

I'm not gonna try to come up with lines but more of a list

F:

1. Larkin
2. Raymond
3. Debrincat
4. Kasper
5. Kane/UFA/Trade
6. Soderblom
7. Copp
8. Compher
9. Tarasenko
10. Rasmussen
11. Mazur
12. Berggren/UFA/Trade/Danielson/Lombardi
13. Plug signing (Smith/Watson/Motte/Shine/whoever)

-I have a feeling Berggren gets traded. Would not be shocked to see Tarasenko traded or bought out either but keeping him for now.

D:

1. Seider
2. Edvinsson
3. UFA/Trade
4. AlJo
5. Chiarot
6. Gus
7. Tuomisto/Wallinder

-Petry walks. Holl is buried in GR or bought out.

I think the Griffins' playoff run could have a significant impact on prospect pecking order next year. If the Griffins get deep into the playoffs, the standouts will certainly have the inside track. It may even play a roll in what Yzerman does in free agency.

Can't really predict but here is what I hope
Danielson
ASP
Mazur
Cossa

But I could see maybe only 1 of them making camp and 2 others getting sprinkled in throughout the season with maybe 1 hitting the roster the next season.

to start the season?

debrincat - kasper - kane
lombardi - copp - mazur

mrazek
cossa
(talbot traded for a mid round pick)

Mazur, Lombardi and ASP.

Hopefully Cossa will out perform the goalies and win a spot too but it will be tough with 2 goalies signed.

Alot to be dependent upon how much dead wood Yzerman moves - Tarasenko, Compher, Rasmussen, Motte, Berggren. I suspect very little to be done as in past years and to watch the same plugs as fans comment how great those Griffins are.

the concerning thing is not only did the Wings bring in Gus(and Holl last year) but that in the past year they've moved on from all of Walman, Ghost, and Maatta

that's some impressively bad decision making on both ends right there lately

Given the contract Ghost was given in Carolina I understand that move. Two more years of a one-dimensional dman like Ghost would effect Seider's PP time and ASP's usage as well.

Maatta was really the only tradeable contract but good lord would I want him over Holl. I know Maatta is a lefty but he couldn't be worse than Holl even on his off side. I can't remember the exact context of that trade. But it's a symptom of just how much the Holl deal screwed the Wings.

I found this quote regarding the Maatta trade, which makes it even more painful. Yes to the second part, hell no to the first part. ugh.

“We talked about Justin (Holl) getting an opportunity and Albert Johansson (getting) an opportunity,” Lalonde said.

Walman will always be a mystery to me. Starting with his being healthy but unavailable at the end of the previous season, then Walman's comments about maybe he was too blunt in the end of season meeting. There better have been a damn good reason to move him like that because this team is not in a position to be giving away assets.

That forward group simply isn’t good enough. It should be Kane + another top 6F.
