Pretty straightforward question - how many goals will he score?

He currently only has 5 goals in his first 13 games, an unusually slow start for him. Small sample, but that's a pace of only ~31 goals on the year.

After 13 games last year, he had 13 goals last year - finished with 69.
After 13 games in 2022, he only had 6 goals....still finished with 60 (including a 51 goals in 50 games streak).
after 13 games in 2021 - he had 11 goals...finished with 41 in 52 (65 goal pace for 82 games).

His consistency at scoring goals has been incredible thus far in his career. That being said, he did also have an off-year in 2022-2023 - only 40 goals in 74 games.

So - what's your prediction, where does Matthews end up?
Does he crash and burn and miss 40?
Does he hit between 41 and 50 - a respectable number, but probably below expectations?
Does he hit between 51 and 60, another very strong and consistent season, if slightly behind last few years?
Does he again surpass 60+?
Does he somehow exceed his best and break 70?

Make a prediction.

Barring injury, minimum ~44 in my opinion. Nowadays with higher scoring, 42-44 goals is the bar to get into the top-10 in goals.

Still the FAV for the rocket in my opinion, but will be tough with guys like Panarin, Kucherov, Connor, Draisaitl (plus some of the other guys with possibilities for career years).

It seems like the pressure has finally gotten to Matthews after my Leafs stripped Tavares of the Captaincy and made Matthews the new captain. But Matthews is still shooting the puck a lot so even with a down year Matthews will most likely score about 45 goals if he plays all 82 games.

In the 40s wouldn't surprise me, but I'll bet on 50s. He's going to go on a streak soon and be right back on pace. He's an outlier, not the norm.

The Leafs are a weaker team this season than last season. They are also in a steady regression towards normalcy from their high season of 115 points.

43 goals.

Matthews isn't young by goal-scorers' standards. Many great and consistent goal-scorers, from Gretzky to Kovalchuk, declined significantly in their late 20s, and Matthews is 27.
Still, I think he is a safe bet for 40+ goals this season, despite the slow start.

Matthews isn't is a decline. Matthews is in a different system.
