Player Discussion Sam "Dikembe" Montembeault

Dobby has come to warn you, Samuel Montembault.

Sorry guy, with Monty, we need to score 5 goals or more to win. Tonight, it was just 3 goals, not enough

Monty is what he is. He’s not a #1. He’s a bridge / stop-gap goaltender until we find a proper replacement.
Off topic but you were right on the meltdown I think during the GDT when we were still up 3-2 . Wanted to call you out on it but refrained myself. I’m eating crow now.

I truly wish I was wrong but I had a sinking feeling. This one really stings. Would have been a massive statement to win this game and instead it feels like it could be the start of our downfall for the rest of season.

We will see what this team is made of over the next couple weeks and their ability to respond.

I never saw him as ''it'', serviceable goalie at best. Of course he's not a Stanley Cup winning goalie lol, who actually believed that?

He's here to plug a hole until someone better arrives and that someone is now on the team (Dobes).

Exactly. And now that the time has come that were transitioning into seriously competing it's time for him to be phased out into a backup role. Run the experiment with Dobes and then go from there.

Monty ain't it and most should know this.

Sam did improve tremendously since acquired few years ago, he has been really good overall, very combative and consistent. Just the fact he will be at the 4 nations is a huge achievement, could even be TC starter (remain to be seen). That said, I think he has limitations technically and will be eventually challenged by Dobes for the no,1 spot. Not to mention Fowler who should be Laval starter next year and Volokhin who is already in the KHL as a 19 yrs old.

Time will settle things, but under a cap era and given our goaltending depth, Monty is probably gone after the next season.

For those saying Montembeault's stats are deflated by a bad team start:

His sv% before December 17th (Carrier aqcuisition) was .900.

His sv% after is .891.

He's gotten worse.

Montembeault has a .897 save percentage and has never surpassed .903 in his career. He’s never been anywhere near good. He is a backup

Has exceeded my expectations

Problem with Monty is when he is bad, he is exceptionally bad. You live with it when you expect to lose but when up 3 and he lays an egg, it pisses you off

He is just technically a bad goalie and his battle is limited by lack lateral mobility.

I am not sold on Dobes yet, Condon won his first 4 games too right? Hard to argue Monty was great but he did have some great saves in the shooting gallery that was his net tonight.

Habs scoring chances: 37
Habs high danger chances: 18

Leafs scoring chances: 30
Leafs high danger chances: 13

Habs expected goals: 3.6
Leafs expected goals: 3.63

One goalie on the ice did as expected, the other was mediocre.
