With a week left before free agency starts, I’m curious how everyone feels about the possibility of losing Kane?

Yzerman said in his end of season presser that ideally he would be able to get Kane re-signed in advance of July 1st and it wouldn’t come down to the last minute again.

He is getting older and has some deficiencies defensively. But at the same time he was a huge part of what last years team did best…. Score on the power play. He also has undeniable chemistry with Cat. When he missed time in the middle of the season, the power play did not function well.

I think he plays a decent game as an affordable second line scoring threat. If it's a one year deal that would be more than ideal because the 2026 free agent class is looking decent. (Though we won't have a true picture of what it is until probably the TDL.)

He gives the Wings a year long buffer until one of the kids (most likely MBN) is ready. That's also important.

Kane is also still productive on the powerplay, and having him run the plays led to high production for the team. Probably the only thing that truly went right for Detroit was the powerplay this year.

I'd say he's important to keep, but it's not earth shattering if he leaves. But we 100% have to find a replacement for him because the team as it is without Kane might have Compher as a top 6 RW.

Voted indifferent but I'm walking that back. Any semblance of decency the team had last year was due to the power play and Kane was the straw that stirred that drink.

It would be hard to find someone in his salary range with his abilities so I say bring the greezy bastard back. Ultimately I think it will be his choice.

Does nothing for the future of this team. Skilled player, but will have aged out of the league by the time we are competetive. Also, he's a scumbag douche.
We should have shopped him at the last two trade deadlines. Never wanted him to begin with, hope we move on. Would rather take a small step back while integrating a kid that might be part of our future.

I voted very important, though, I often see the individual as a placeholder. We need him, or at least someone like him. Preferably we resign Kane + bring in someone else who can help drive meaningful offence.

Fun fact, Patrick Kane recorded a primary point on 17% of all Red Wing goals. He has been critical to this team's offence, If you don't keep him you need a damn good plan to bring in a meaningful replacement.

I think it would be extremely difficult to find a replacement. Who on the UFA market could back fill Kane's role? After Ehlers or Marner, is there even a viable option?

If we have to go down the trade route there will be a few more options out there but then you're spending big assets to help the offence essentially tread water (Trying to replace 38 primary points) rather than actively upgrading.

Its difficult to imagine a situation where this team gets better without resigning Kane.

Still very productive PP merchant. Coaching staff has to carve out the right role for him, sheltered matchups, mostly o zone starts and must have a strong defensive center who isn't a zero offensively. I think McLellan figured this out with Kasper and he seemed to show he could handle this role that Copp and Compher can't. Without that type of player with Kane, his negatives get exposed to the point that it over cancels out his positives.

I am on board with him on another one year deal and keep doing it until he can't produce anymore.

Also Patrick Kane III and Archie DeBrincat need to continue growing up Red Wing hockey lovers. Trick can set up Archie for 600 goals or so for the Wings starting about 15 years from now. Hopefully both will grow up with a little more height than their dads. 😜

I fully agree. It's not me you need to convince. It's the rest of this crowd that is indifferent. The FAs that we could sign to replace him will cost 8+ million to get.

And off the PP his primary point involvement on Wing goals is less than 1% higher than Andrew Copp's at 11% and change.

How much offence is he really providing when we give up more goals against with him on the ice? More game time at 5 on 5 then pp time, so that is a negative in my opinion.
Yes he is the sole reason we give up goals on the ice. Holl would be a Norris candidate if it weren't for Patrick Kane..

That is a silly response. Kane is one of the worst defensive players on the team, so yes he is a major reason for goals against. Bringing up Holl is why your post is basically a load of BS as no one thinks Holl is good.

It’s easy to get lost trying to fix your problems and focus on negatives when your team has been losing for so long.

But sometimes you have to acknowledge when something went great and try to preserve that. In this case our power play was lights out and Kane played a big role. I really don’t want to mess with that.

He is also incredible in the shootouts and that alone has got us multiple extra points per season.

I get that he is part of the problem with not being big enough or fast enough at 5 on 5 and he definitely isn’t helping the PK. But there are other ways to open up 4 or 5 roster spots to address those concerns (Tarasenko/Compher to start)

I think he'd be pretty easy to bring back but if we somehow were able to acquire Mitch Marner I'd say that Marner would take his spot. So I said indifferent although I would have no problem bringing him back if that's the best we can do on a scoring line.
Agreed, Kane would be unnecessary in an unlikely Marner signing scenario.
