How high can McDavid get?

Right now McDavid has put up 39+87=126 points during his career in the playoffs. McDavid currently ranks 115th in all time playoff goals, 40th in all time playoff assists and 58th in all time playoff points. Wayne Gretzky leads all categories with 122 goals, 260 assists and 382 points.

McDavid is 28 years old and probably has anywere from 10 to 15 more playoff runs in him. It's not looking good right now as McDavid seems like he's going to get eliminated by the Kings in the first round, but when it comes to the all time playoff numbers things are looking pretty bright for McDavid. Nobody around here probably doubts that McDavid will reach 200 playoff points and most will say he's pretty much a lock for 250. But could we see McDavid join Gretzky as the only other player with 300+ playoff points? Or could McDavid even take a run at some of Gretzky's playoff totals? He already broke Gretzky's single season assist record, 260 assists doesn't seem impossible as McDavid is a pass first player. Goals will probably be harder but 80-90 playoff goals seems doable. What do you think, how high can McDavid get in some of the all time playoff stat categories?

Pretty high it would seem

Best thing for McDavid’s point totals would be to never win a cup, so he stays in playoff rage mode forever.

Not that I want that, but would be the max point total version of McDavid.

Hard to say, since anything can happen at any time. For instance, Crosby had 185 points through his age 30 season, and seemed poised to hit 250. He has added just 16 to his total in the 7 postseasons that have passed since, thanks to four first round exits followed by three complete no shows

For now, McDavid certainly seems like he’s tracking for 250 points or more. If they make the Finals again and he hits 40 points on the nose, he’ll already be at 157 points, which would be 28th all-time, depending on how far Ovechkin and the Capitals go this year. He might not be at even 100 games played yet, and in that case, all but two players ahead of him played at least 150 games and half of them played 200+ games. He might rank 20th already in total assists.

It’s amazing that he’s just 9 assists from tying Mario’s assist total while playing 29 fewer games as of right now.

Hes done with his 10 first seasons in the NHL soon. most players have their most productive years before 28. So 300 seems very hard. Unless he plays for. Long time and start signing short deals to always be ble to play for a contender kinda like Perry is doing to Get enough games. Or he might suddenly be stukket on a team not good enough to contend anymore like Crosby.

Seems pretty optimistic.

Agreed.

Let’s just say he plays through his age 39 season and then retires. That a potential of up to 11 more playoff runs.

I believe he wins this year, and if that’s the case, he’s likely somewhere between 150-160 points.

Whether or not they win again, I think he and the Oilers make another few deep runs over the next handful of years. Naturally he’s going to be a part of some early exits again and simply missing the playoffs outright.

I think it’s reasonable to pencil in:

3 deep runs—Conference Finals and/or Stanley Cup Finals.

5 runs that end in the first or second round—let’s say 3 first round exits and 2 second round exits.

3 times missing the playoffs.

It’s not reasonable to keep expecting him to go out and drop 40+ points each deep run. I think it’s fair to just remove one entirely and pencil in 80 points total for the 3 deep runs (about 27 points each time).

Being just as critical, I’m going to give 3 first round exits totaling 15 points (5 points each run) and 2 second round exits totaling 25 points (about 12-13 points each run).

3 misses for 0 points.

If he’s sitting at 155 by the end of this postseason, that gets him to 260.

I think that’s reasonable. I had him miss the playoffs 27% of the time, and go no further than the second round 73% of the time.

TLDR: Barring an early retirement, 260 career points is reasonable to expect and 10-15 more postseason runs is unrealistic.

Until there is a Cup, who cares. Give me a center who backchecks and wins a 2-1 game than puts up 5 points and loses 6-5.
entertainment value is certainly higher with the 2nd player.

maybe not McDavid but i would rather watch Bedard or Michkov scoring 60 goals per season for next decade but never getting close to the cup than cheer for a team that is winning 2-1 games regularly and winning a cup or 2 in the process.

Watch sure but you know damn well if McDavid doesnt win ever in EDM, those fans would trade this entire decade for one boring SC run where a Kopitar or Barkov wins a Cup for them.
