How good was Daigle supposed to be?

"I'm glad I got drafted first, because no one remembers number two" - Alexandre Daigle

Number two being Chris Pronger

137 or something points in junior there I think it said.

That's just a massive total, even for junior. I seem to remember he was compared almost to the same level as Lindros. That he only achieved mediocre status came as a huge dissapointment to all involved.

The pace he started the year with was the real big deal. He had 74 points after the first 22 games. Put that up for a whole year and it's 200 something - in his 2nd year in the Q. Lemieux had 184 points in his 2nd year. The 137 points Daigle ended up with were excellent for a player that age but obviously not in the Lemieux league anymore and not as unique either.

With Daigle, I wonder when exactly the Senators noticed that they had messed up. 51 points in the 1st year probably were less than they hoped for, but there must have still been enough excuses to rationalize it. 37 points in the lockout season wasn't yet terrible either. Really, 95/96 was when it really hit the fan, but I wonder what gave exactly?

One of my favourite newspaper headlines ever came after Pamela Anderson dumped him. "Daigle can't score off the ice, either".

While Daigle was a gigantic bust, people seem to forget his first two seasons. He was actually decent for those 2 years. He then had a decent half-season stretch in Philly, then scored 51 points in the dead-puck era.

When the Flyers got him, he actually played fairly well and seemed to be a good fit on the 2nd line.

I remember that headline and I thought at the time "doesn't quite make sense because he presumably scored because he was actually dating Pam Anderson".

only laughing at you because it was posted in the thread earlier

it is not a big thread--so obviously you did not read it

as for how good he was supposed to be

Yserman and Sakic was the prediction

but the warning lights came on quickly as reports started coming out shortly after the draft about his attitude and other stuff.

Anytime people ask why teams put so much energy into psych reports--Daigle is the name that first pops out as to why. SOme people figured that using the standards they use now for drafting--daigle would have suffered a robbie schremp style of drop in his draft year.

Daigle had an astronomical ego before he even stepped foot on an NHL ice surface. I think he came in expecting things to be easy for him, after all, he was treated and acted as if he was already a superstar. He had a huge endorsement deal with Score (the trading card company) and I believe he was also had a deal with JOFA. I'm sure his head was hovering above the stratosphere when he was still a teenager, courtesy of his representatives and believing his own hype.

good burn buddy. high fives.

What in the world do you consider a bust then..? He was brought to the Sens for the sole purpose of scoring goals. He did the exact opposite of that during his ENTIRE career. His highest goal total was 26.
Just a nitpick, Daigle was far more of a playmaker than a goal-scorer in junior, with twice as many assists than goals. In the AHL he had 21 goals and 50 assists. In the Swiss league is was 53 and 113.
