As of right now he is:
1st in NHL in goals/60
2nd in NHL in goals/60 at 5 v 5
6th in the NHL in points/60
8th in NHL in points/60 at 5 v 5
I absolutely believe playing with Protas who is a monster has elevated him this season. Ovechkin is like a Barry Sanders - he is going to get you a lot of 1, 2 and negative yard runs throughout the game but then out of nowhere he will rattle off a 70-yard touchdown.
The entire point of possession is to increase your odds of scoring a goal and limit the chances that your opponent does. But when you are this good at scoring goals and with the efficiency he's at this year, you can forego some possession metrics and still be a very impactful player. I saw the Capitals win possession battles with the Penguins in the playoffs on the regular only to lose because Pittsburgh would get a a quick odd man rush and bury their chance.
This is not me arguing he should be in MVP conversations or anything like that, just that there is more than one way to help your team win in the NHL. The guys who drive possession and also bury their chances are the real MVP candidates and those days are long gone for No. 8.
