How does this team compare now to the best Hank teams?

Still, can't for the life of me figure out why the Rangers suddenly had, not one, but TWO back to backs in the middle of the Playoffs. I believe that ridiculous scheduling, more than anything, is what doomed what I believe was the first cup run.

Those Torts team would've bullied this team into submission. Fox and Panarin will be saying no mas. Against AV's first year, this team would've been skated out the barn. Young Kreider will be homing in on Shesty all series long...

Et tu? Have you been reading Habs fans' posts?

Kreider Mika Lafreniere
Panarin Strome Vatrano
Chytil Goodrow Copp
Motte Rooney Reaves
Kakko (IR)

Lindgren Fox
Miller Trouba
Braun Schneider

vs

i forget the exact lines of the 2014 cup finals team but something like...

Kreider-Richards-MSL
Nash-Stepan-Callahan
Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello
Hagelin-Boyle-Dorsett
Moore

McD-Girardi
Staal-Stralman
Moore-Klein
Just by doing a rough position to position comparison...

2022 Kreider > 2014 Kreider
Mika > Richards
Laf < MSL

Panarin > Nash
Strome = Stepan, maybe > ? Debatable, yeah?
Vatrano < Callahan - small sample size - but I think Cally's PK and grit give him the edge in the playoffs but Cally was also out of the playoffs that year so I don't remember who played there. Dominic Moore?

Chytil < Pouliot
Goodrow < Brassard
Copp < Zuccarello - Goodrow and Copp are probably better built for the playoffs but PBZ was a force to be reckoned with.

Motte < Hagelin
Rooney > Boyle
Reaves > Dorsett

Fox > McD
Lindgren > Girardi (i forget if G was on the decline yet)

Miller < Staal (this was Ovie smothering Staal IIRC)
Trouba > Stralman

Braun > Moore
Schneider < Klein

Shesty = Hank

I don't have a good scoring system for this but just from raw > vs <, I have 2022 better by a count of 9-8
agree? disagree?
2014 gets a lot of their points from PBZ. 2022 gets a lot from their top players so as long as they can show up in the playoffs, 2022 is looking good. More grit in the bottom 6.

13-14 and 14-15 would absolutely break this team in half.

I don't know if I agree that this team is so much more talented. At the top, yes. The Rangers have rarely had stars like Panarin and Fox. At the same time, there's players in this teams top six (Hunt, Vatrano, yes Lafreniere) that are healthy scratches in 13-14. Ryan Strome is a 4th liner on the 13-14 team. Chytil is a scratch. After Zibanejad, it absolutely falls off a cliff.

I think they actually beat 11-12. Both teams are overreliant on goaltending but this team has a powerplay.

But this team has willed themselves to wins all season this year. They're tied for the league lead in comeback wins. Why aren't they getting credit for that like the 11-12 team? If your answer is because that 11-12 team did it in the playoffs, well the playoffs haven't started yet this season.
Regular season, though. Usually in a regular season game, one team wants it more than the other. And the team that wants it more wins. In the Playoffs both teams will do anything to win, separating the men from the boys.

It's kind of crazy how they're still less talented than Colorado, Florida, Tampa, and Carolina. How has the league become so talented?

We have better goaltending than all but Tampa though and even that's arguable.
I feel like the league could definitely support you more teams, talent-wise. There is so much talent out there these days.

I don't think so. They just play much better as a team 5v5, in the regular season. They play a different brand of hockey. Colorado has insane top talent but they will become like Edmonton and Toronto with no depth after all the new contracts kick in.

For whatever reason, this team has not come together yet.

At a high level, it’s really challenging to compare this team to those teams. The game was different back then and Torts had them playing like a defensive juggernaut…those 2011-2015 teams had some inconceivable record with a lead going into the 3rd period. IMO, that alone might give them a slight advantage. Although, this current team has some serious resilience. Their ability to ignore the scoreboard and fight back is as good as I’ve seen from any team since I started watching some 25 years ago.

With that said, I’d love to see this current team match up against one of those later Torts/early AV teams. I’d bet a 7 game series would go the distance more often than not.

If you give this current roster another year or two, I think they have the potential to be significantly better. But a lot of that hinges on finding a permanent 2C and guys like Kakko, Laf, Miller, and Schneider taking the next step.

In 14/15 Jamie Benn won the Art Ross with 87 points. We have 4 guys who may break thst this season. It’s a different league.

That was an outlier more than anything else.

2013-14:
Zuccarello leads the Rangers with 59
Crosby leads the league with 104

2015-16:
Zuccarello leads the Rangers with 61
P. Kane leads the league with 106

2016-17:
Zuccarello leads the Rangers with 59
Crosby leads the league with 100

2017-18:
Zuccarello leads the Rangers with 53
McDavid leads the league with 108

On paper this team is much better
But can GG find the right combos?
Will the kids melt under pressure?
Cant wait to find out
:)

Significantly better top six offense talent. Worse team defense and Not as well rounded. Not battle tested.

Yeah but we don't know how much this team wants it in the playoffs yet.

Really interesting thread.

I have no clue how some of you differentiate the years, they blend to me.

Quick review, I don’t see Hagelin mentioned enough. His speed was a problem for the opposition. We played D, blocked shots, and pushed pace on the flanks.

I was never a Callahan guy. Not much love for Dubinsky. Never cared much for Stepan either…It was all about Henrik and the D support for me.

My passion for this team/this era exceeds what we had. Henrik deserved so much better.

I asked this in the Motte thread but can he be the new version of Hagelin? Maybe less productive?

I'd say the team rn is better, than many other teams we had, but the league in general is stronger too. So in relation with context, they are close in caliber.

Overall this team has more talent but not as many finished products. Hank's best teams also knew how to grind out playoff games and were incredibly seasoned. the 2022 Rangers do have a bit of that undefinable quality that they know Igor can keep them close and they can get a goal when they need it. That will go a long way in the playoffs if they can match the intensity level of the more veteran teams they will face. Exciting times ahead.

I always complain about this. As good as we are at times. We still don’t have as much scoring depth as teams like Carolina Florida Colorado Toronto or Tampa. Back then it was always Chicago and Pittsburgh or the caps etc. but teams like the kings blues and Bruins didn’t have those types or rosters and they won titles too grinding it out and stopping those teams. I think there is a balance forming here backed by a great goaltender. They just need a little more scoring in the top 6 and I think when that develops or gets added one day. Then they’ll be built way better than any team we had from 2009 to 2015

definitely not. Hagelin was a very unique player in that he was a top 3 skater in hockey and drove shots like a mad man. Motte, conversely, is fast but more defense oriented and more physical. He's also decidedly a 4th liner whereas Hagelin was a 2nd line player at quite a few points in his career.

this group can easily be the best of those teams but they're still very young and green so it's unlikely.

I'd comfortably take the 13-14 over this one, 14-15 too but less comfortably. I think 11-12 loses though, this team's PP would be way too much to handle.
