How does Crosby get away with it? (Lack of social media presence)

In the age of social media Crosby quite the exception. He is the biggest name in hockey and has no twitter, facebook, instagram. Kudos to him for being able to keep his privacy but how does he do it? All the biggest stars in their respective sports have at least some presence. Most have a lot.

Could he pull it off if he entered the league as a rookie today? McDavid has a social media presence since junior. I wonder if he has faced any pressure from the league to go on it.

Because he is a god living amongst us mere mortals.

We should just feel thankful that he allows us to share his oxygen.

Part of the reason I like him. Hes a humble down to earth guy who just loves playing hockey. Amazing role model for kids.

I do kind of wonder if he gets any pressure from his agent, team or league to interact more. There's a real-life dollar value to that stuff.

Probably, but he's clearly not into social media or anything like that. Many people aren't.

He makes a ton of money already so he doesn't really need to "build his brand" like a lot of celebs seem to think they do. He also doesn't seem so impressed with himself to think anyone really gives a **** what he thinks about politics or whatever.

He's mentioned in interviews before that he's not very good with technology. All that stuff probably confuses him too much.

And you can tell that he's the type of person who really doesn't like attention but knows he has to deal with it due to being really good at something people like to watch.

Admittedly I watch a lot of his interviews, and I just get the impression by the way he speaks (he talks quietly, sometimes almost hesitantly) that he still doesn't think of himself as a big deal and just wants to be a guy who does his job to the best of his abilities. Like even to this day he still isn't really sure why people are so interested in him and in hearing what he has to say about anything and everything.

he gets away with it probably because of who he is... obviously.

He's the best player in the world... he does everything necessary on the ice, no need for anything else.

He isn't a complete egomaniac like 90% of other superstars are.

Most hockey players in general are fairly humble and not that ego driven. Not like Basketball or Football where all the stars are tweeting/instagramming daily.

Just curious. You guys are saying 'humble' like its a good trait. To me that just sounds boring.

I'm asking how he is able to do it when the biggest names in all respective sports have moderate - large presence. He's the only one with none at all. Which is cool but not sure how it's possible. Must face tremendous pressure from marketing companies and league promo dept. There are tons of fake Crosby twitter accounts as well.

How does he do it? He just doesn't do it. Not that hard of a mystery to solve.

A lot of great players use social media respectfully and correctly. What's the difference? If he doesn't like social media then that's his choice but i don't understand what makes him so great because he doesn't use social media. Obviously he is one of the best hockey players in the nhl but why do we care if he does or does not have a Twitter?

It is just who he is. It isn't a "good" or "bad" thing. It just is his personality. Subban has a far different personality, that is fine too.

If Crosby would rather run low key hockey camps for kids in the summer in Nova Scotia and not tweet pictures from some vacation spot or do whatever many athletes do, who cares?

Good to see him stay away from it. Yeah he's the best player in the world but he deserves a social life when he's away from hockey. Him not being on social media is a breath of fresh air in this day of everyone having Facebook/Twitter/Instagram.

wow. I was unaware that Sid shunned social media. I'm even a bigger Sid fan now than I was 2 minutes ago.

Atta Boy, Sid.

Thing is though, he could make all of those and would that really change your opinion of him if he does what a lot of players do and use it sparingly with no outlandish stuff? Not you specifically but if he decided to get a Twitter are we gonna say nope not supporting him? It's a life decision and probably has nothing to do with hockey. Some people are just busy and don't have time, some don't understand technology. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Crosby is good or bad for no social media but he is in the media so much that he doesn't need to do it himself

Crosby doesn't have a Twitter account because he knows he'll never be able to match-up with the Iron Sheik.

You're asking how he is able to choose NOT to do something. The answer is simply that he chooses not to.

Just curious. You guys are saying 'humble' like its a good trait. To me that just sounds boring.
It's a good trait in my eyes. I really respect people who don't let fame inflate their heads and create a sense of entitlement. It's so easy for that to happen when you're surrounded by "yes" men and have starry-eyed fans act like you're the next coming of God.

Humility can be seen as boring to some but it's refreshing to me.

I absolutely love that about him. I love hearing about famous people who are low key and just live their lives without posting and bragging about everything to everyone. He doesn't need to do that, he just plays hockey and lives his life. How he does it is he doesn't need to and doesn't want to, it's as simple as that. People just assume he's a boring guy, but I bet to his friends and family he's far from it.

I like how having social media = not humble, egotistical. A lot of humble NHLers are on social media but okay!

The anti social media, millenials will never fail to make me laugh. Probably the same people that go on YT to the old songs and complain about how "they were born in the wrong generation, ugh!"

I don't think anyone is saying that, it's just that not having it and just going about his business very clearly indicates he is humble and not egotistical. Not that anyone who does have it doesn't share the same traits.

Crosby just seems uncomfortable being the centre of attention when it comes to non-hockey things. Given how he's been the face of the league for so many years, you never see any "normal life" pictures, news on friends and family, any outings, etc. The only thing that you occasionally see is an ad with hockey company or gatorade.

Not quite true.

Obviously, I am a Flyers fan so no love crush on Sid. But as a professional, he is squeaky clean and what teams love. He is an extremely hard worker and hockey is his craft.

Now do I personally find him boring? Yes. He has been taught what to say, and not to say since he was a child. I like guys with more personality.

I live in Halifax so we see more info on Sid than most. He goes to the local pubs and eateries with friends, other players, etc... He is always gracious in signing autographs, taking pics, etc... But we here in the Maritimes, also make sure to give him his space. Lots of us know where he lives, his parents live, what he drives, where he likes to go, where he practices, and where he golfs. It's not a big deal really. We give him his space and he does do his appearances where the crowds show up because it is a planned event.

He prefers to not be in the spotlight. Being off of social media allows that.
